Re: Kumon Chinese

My kids have been doing it for about 4 months now. It has improved their Mandarin at school and their self-study skills.

Their tones have become more accurate as well. We also like it because the ESF Chinese only uses simplified characters but w/ Kumon they can do the traditional characters.

So far, the emphasis seems to be on pronunciation and character recognition, not so much on writing. But that's OK for me, I'm more concerned about their speaking and reading than their writing.

Re: Kumon Chinese

hi loupou and qqyang,
May I know how old are your kids? I'm thinking to send my son for kumon chinese from K2 not sure if it's too early.
also, will it be confusing for them to learn traditional Chinese at kumon but simplified at school?  I think you can also choose to learn simplified chinese at Kumon right?
  thanks.

Re: Kumon Chinese

My son has been studying in Kumon since 3 1/2 years of age.  He is nine years old now.

In fact, it is quite boring to the IS students.  In particularly there is a lot of the repetition to do the worksheets.

Throughout the process I have a lot of struggles with him to do the worksheets.   But I am not offering him another choice. since he has a lot of the bargains/decisions in all other areas.

Actually I saw a lot of the IS students quit in between the process.   For me, Kumon is the only classwork that I accompany/supervise on him to do.  Or else he will be running around and definitely not doing it.

Re: Kumon Chinese

My kids are almost 11 and 9. They both started this autumn. The younger one is still in the very beginning, the older one is more advanced. I think that is because she had 2 years in a local primary, Cantonese medium school, and because she had a better attitude towards learning the Chinese.

Yes, you have the choice of simplified, if you like. We chose traditional because we wanted our kids to have an easier time reading the Chinese that is all around them, and because I think that it's easier to learn to recognize traditinal characters.

I'm a foreigner and started to learn Chinese when I was 18 years old. In my university we were expected to learn to recognize both simplified and traditional forms and to write traditional.

Maybe my brain is weird, but I felt that traditional were easier to read, there was more for my brain to hang onto. I still have a hard time differentiating between the simplified form of "nong"  (农) (farm, agriulture, e.g. 農民) and yi (clothes) 衣.

I don't have any advice as per the age, since my kids were in primary when they started. They both started to learn Chinese characters, but in traditional form w/ Cantonese pronunciation in K-1 (local kindie).

Re: Kumon Chinese

- his chinese standard is quite good (in his reading, not his writing)
- I do not expect the IS students will take initiative in reading Chinese chapter books.
- he learned simplified characters only.
- I can not be too pushy for him to learn Chinese, or else I am afraid he will turn his back and run away from it.
- he found the worksheets quite boring and of repetition.  But I am quite satisfied with his progress so far.

bubbles114,

My daughter has recently joined Kumon.  But I sometimes have doubt on the effectiveness of Kumon method.

How is the progress of your kid so far?  Which level of Kumon is he in?  Can he read Chinese chapter books by himself?  Can he write?

Do you teach him additional Chinese other than Kumon?
