Re: what's wrong with local (mother tongue) school? why do we want to send our k
I like people telling me I am wrong, if they are right. A teacher posted his comments about this topic in ESF parents' forum.

local Vs. international (202.64.205.66)
Date: 03-17-2005 17:06
I am a local secondary school teacher and my girl is studying in P2 at Beacon Hill School. I think I can say something about local Vs. international from an insider's viewpoint. Actually local schools teachers are very very hardworking and many of them cater for the needs of students to their very best! (as most of my colleagues do) The main problem is that local parents are expecting too much on the teachers, many of them would think that all learning takes place inside the school, they don't think that knowledge are everywhere in their daily lives. If I ask my students to read more books and pay more attention to road signs in English, their first response is "would this be examined in our final exam?" If teachers don't give enough homework for students to spend their whole night struggling for the answers, complaints would be received from parents to say that the teacher is lazy. To survive and to secure our jobs, teachers can only succumb to the tide! With more and more assessments introduced at different levels to check for the progress of students from the EMB, I think the above phenomenon would just go worst. To escape from the above vicious cycle, the only thing I can do to my girl is to escape from the local system. I don't think that a foreign curriculum, no matter UK or US or whatever, would be the final answer to a child with all the good characters parents are expecting for. Remember that many students in UK cannot meet the basic standards set by the Government. But I think non-local curriculum can give room for parents to nurture their kids according to their own expectations, not the expectations of EMB or the school.
My impression:
-Parents are wrong
-EMB is wrong
-Teachers are hardworking to keep their jobs
-All we can do is to send our son/daughter to International Schools
