Epilepsy - Ketogenic diet treatment

In January, I posted this message before my son finally started the ketogenic diet to treat his intractable Epilepsy. The medications were not helping my son at all. His seizures were so frequent and have about 100 times/day.
I would like to update my son's current condition. He finally started the ketogenic diet at PWH in March 13, 2007. On the 3rd day after starting the diet, his seizures were a lot less. After a week, his seizures dropped to only 13 times/day.
I would like to let the parents with Epileptic child know that there is another treatment. Ketogenic diet is a realistic treatment, not a last resort. My boy starts to develop again and now being off all medications, he is only on the ketogenic diet to stop his seizures.

Re: Epilepsy - Ketogenic diet treatment

Yes, the diet is 90% fat but calorie restriction and so my son won't gain or lose weight.
Before the diet, he has limited response, almost no smile. The antiepileptic drug made him even worst, more seizures and we found the diet from the internet and it is quite popular in the USA.
The neuro and dietitian in PWH are very help and they are all very happy with the success of the diet. There are also a lots of success stories and I found 3 keto moms in HK.
I am in a process of translating the details in Chinese so for those moms who don't understand English can have a chance to know about the diet.
Are you a dietitian?

Re: Epilepsy - Ketogenic diet treatment

The website below gives a clear explanation of ketogenic diet:

KETOGENIC DIET

It's not an easy task to follow the strict limitation of the diet.  crybeebee, your success is really admirable.

Re: Epilepsy - Ketogenic diet treatment

The diet is very strict but it is not as difficult as people or like the doctors said. More important is that you have to be psychologically well prepared. This is because the fine tuning period is very frustrating and we are still on this process. We haven't had 100% control yet but at least 90% and his recent EEG shows pretty positive result.

Actually, no doctor recommend us to try the diet but as I believe the diet. Now I now is mainly because they don't know or has no experience about the diet. I've read up the Ketogenic diet book(written by Dr. John Freeman at Johns Hopkins hospital in the USA) and showed my commitment to the neuro at PWH and she then let us start with it.

They are now planning to start the diet to another patient who is 4 yr old with grandmal type seizures and so far no medication can help.

The chance of letting the diet works actually much higher than the next medication.

There is new medication every year and they are actually "brother" or "sister" to each other. If there is no medication, I believe there will be more people trying the diet.

The ketogenic diet is "First do, no harm". I hope my experience can help the others as well.

Re: Epilepsy - Ketogenic diet treatment

Also, from my understanding that quite a lot of epileptic child are being "classified" as Autism kids but they are not.

From the video "riceless", the kid looks like A-kid but turned out after he is seizure free, he is able to communicate.
