based on what i heard from a relative who has not been living in hong kong for the past 10 years, i wonder if the information is still valid.

1) island school is a rich kid's school ?

2) most students are locals.

3) drugs and drinking are common.

It was not true even 10 years ago.

There are 3 Island Schools in ESF, which one are you interested in?
(1) Island School
(2) South Island School
(3) West Island School

Everyday I meet lots of Island School students on MTR.    Besides, around 15-20 years ago, I visited "Island School" for a project.  I had experience to talk to the teachers and students there.

I am trying to answer the following questions.

1) island school is a rich kid's school ?
my ans: Not necessary.  However, obviously the parents at least are able to pay the school fee while the local schools are free of charge.

2) most students are locals.
my ans: Not really.  I can see quite a lot of foreigners.

3) drugs and drinking are common.
my ans: Hard to say.  It is a common phenomenon nowadays.  I can see 60% students behave not very well on MTR.  Meanwhile, I can see 40% read books quietly.

How to mold our kids is not solely the school's issue.  It is highly related to your guidance.

How would you compare Island School students with those from other international schools, e.g. their outlook, manner?

No matter which 'Island School' you are talking about, ESF schools actually don't have a good reputation amongst the international schools circle in Hong Kong. South Island School and West Island School are indeed better than the Island School though.

1) island school is a rich kid's school ?
ans: Not really. But apparently kids from Island school aren't poor as their parents have to pay for the school fees anyways.

2) most students are locals.
ans: No. I guess ESF schools are known to have a pretty large population of foreign students within the student body. There, indeed, are quite a number of local students, but the local students population is surely lower than some certain international schools in Hong Kong.

3) drugs and drinking are common.
ans: Yes. And actually, these problems are common amongst all the international schools(secondary) in Hong Kong. I don't mean to scare you, but I heard an incident of Island School a few years ago. There was some sorta event going on at school. The students were having fun and got so high. A guy and a girl from Year 9 (as I remember) had sex in the drama studio at school and got caught by the school principal.

If you know any high school students from international schools, most of them have bad impression on ESF school students. Of course there are good students in ESF school, but with bad peers, wouldn't you be worried about your kid's growth?

Source please?
Year 9 .... 13 years old ?
Sounds like a criminal offense to me. So quite incredible that they were able to escape any police investigations.

The incident was told by an Island School student who was in the same year with those two students. Reporting to police or not completely depends on the school decision as it might affect the school's reputation, but both of them got expelled from the school.

Even for local schools, there are students who have had sex experience already, how often do you see this kind of news in news report?

If you are considering ESF schools, I would suggest you to apply for WIS or SIS, which are better in academic capability. But if you have decided to put your kid into international schools, I would suggest you not to worry about the drinking problem at least. Because the majority of students studying in international schools drink, or have at least drunk before, there is just no way you can worry about. (<--and here I'm talking about ALL schools, not just ESF schools)

It may not be common in year 7-10, but it becomes more and more common moving up grades.

I read more news about drugs, drunk, smoke and sex problems happening in local schools more than in IS.  My kid and her classmates studying in ESF secondary school (not Island School though) for a few years so far are behaving very well.  The school has system and procedures in place to monitor the students' behaviour.  It is always more important for parents to educate your children to have good value judgement since they are small.

Thanks for all of the sharings. This forum is open, no matter if the news and comments are positive or negative. All the mentioned problems can be complicated, depending on many factors on the kids. If there are different peers at school, the choice of association is crucial. Parents' input also matters.

Any IS parents here can share the school life of IS?

Students in Island Schools [and other ESf schools] need to choose the langauage(s) to learn. The details can be found in

http://clc.esf.edu.hk/GroupHomepage.asp?GroupId=224
(Island School>Departments>Modern Foreign Languages>PATHWAYS)

Can any ESF parents share ideas how to make the decision?
