I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

Hello, everyone, this is Jen. I have a 9 months old son and we just moved here. Because I have no idea about the educational system in HK, I would really appreciate your help.
I look at some of the posted message, and everyone seems so panic    So, is it really competitive of getting into those popular international kindergartens?  I am just looking for one that teaches NATIVE English, with or without Putonhua, and it would be perfect if it is Canadian-based
My friend then suggests me to take a look at
1. ESF
2. Anfield
3. Kingston
4. Tutor Time
What do you think about them? Any comments?
Also, can anyone kindly suggests a list of other popular international kindergartens in Kwoloon side?

Jen,

Try the Canadian Int'l School in Nam Long Shan Road.  Pretty good school, teachers are caring and patient. They are offering pre-reception class starting this academic year (3 year olds).

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

My colleague just applied the reception class (4 yrs) for her son and got accepted. She said the facilities of the school was really good. The school fee was reasonable but I think the debenture was a bit expensive, more than $300000. the most important was, the school has chinese lesson everyday! i am thinking of letting my daughter to attend their pre-reception class too if she failed to be admitted by my favourite conventional kindergarten...

Jen,

Beside ESF, i guess is less choice in the Kowloon side. You may take a look at CAIS

www.cais.edu.hk

This school follows the curriculum of Canada (Saskatchewan) and supported by the Alliance Church.

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

Hello JennferT,
The competition ESF in Tsing Yi is keen, meaning that it is quite difficult unless you son can speak fluent English. In addition, there is no promise for the students to promote to any of the ESF primary school.
However, it is a really nice International kindergraten, high standard + nice principle and staff !
My daughter is studying in Kingston, British-based Int'l school. Very nice environment too. My daughter also attend Tutor-time in Kln Tong before she entered Kingston (it is because there was no class for early infant in Kingston). Oh, Tutor-time use American-based curriculum.
I know there are lots of Indian teachers in Anfield so I didn't choose this school.
Actually, there are summer courses in Tutor-time and Anfield, you can actually join their summer courses before making your final decision.
In addition, Kingston has already operated its own Primary section and  linked with the ESF new secondary school in Shatin. The environment in primary school is nice, however, it is a bit small and loacted beside Waterloo road.
Hope these info. may help you ! Welcome to pm for any questions

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

Hi JenniferT,

I note that your son was born in Sept 2003.  In that case, you still have a lot of time to decide which school you would like your son to go to.  ESF has a schedule for submitting applications and in your case, they will accept applications from 1st June 2005 onwards.  Unlike those born in the first half of the year (Jan-June), applications must be made in Feb.

Another good choice (or perhaps even better) for you would be the one suggested by Ingridmama below.  Christian Alliance P.C. Lau Memorial International School, a Canadian based Christian school and is located in Kowloon.  But note they only accept children from K3 onwards.  Anyway, do take a look at their webiste:-
http://www.cais.edu.hk/

Just one more thing.  A lot of my friends' whose children were brought up in Canada & Australia, really regret for not letting their children learn Chinese.  Indeed, they lack the time and facilities for teaching them.  Now you are moving back to Hong Kong and your son is only 9 months old, why don't you give him a chance to learn some Chinese, at least at kinder stage?  I know two Western families who purposely send their children to conventional kinders so that they can learn to read and speak Chinese.  Anyway, this is purely my personal opinion and of course decison is entirely up to you.

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

By the way, ICS (International Christian School) also has a very good reputation.  Like CAIS, it is a Christian school but it is US based.  A new campus which will combine the primary and secondary sections of the school in Shatin is under construction.  I am not sure whether their kindergarten will also be merged into the same campus.  Anyway, it's worth taking a look at their website:-

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

hi puibb,
Would you please tell me at what age do your bb attend tutor time ?
I want to sent my son, now 9 months old, to attend the playgroup there. However, my friend said that it is too early and it would be a waste of money.
please give your opinion.
thank you very much.

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

Hi Angela,

I don't think 9 months old to join is waste.  The idea for playgroup is let baby to get used to go to school.  Let them see new faces and play with some other children.  That is very important to them especially in HK nowadays.  Children need to have interview to join Kindergarten.  If they scared to see other people, how can they pass?

Re: I just moved to HK from Canada and I really need your advice......

Hello angelachan,
childern between 0-2 years old called sensori-motor stage.
During this stage, children learn throught exploring. I can tell you that it is not late to send your son, who is 0-month-old, to learn.

Firstly, experenced teachers can elicit your son more to learn than you teach your son yourself.
Secondly, 'social' factors is another good reason to go to school in early ages!

Experts (a psychologist called Andersson)suggest that children benefit the most if they enter to day care under 1 year old.

I remembered that I sent my daughter to Tutor-time at about 7-month, even thought I am a secondary school teachers, I would rather let her to study earlier, laern more, social more. She did really enjoy going to school at that age. She enjoyed playing and talking to the teachers very much , she also enjoyed the facilities in there such as the ball pool in 1st floor and the little indoor playground in the 2nd floor and also like playing sand in the outdoor playgound. She learnt a lots of English and Mardrain songs, I am so pleased to hear her singing voices during her shower time.

However, some psychologist also suggest that children who are shy would not benefit from early day care at all. They would rather scary of going to school in the future. Certainly, children who first go to school will fell shy, it is normal, but if your son doesn't enjoy it at the first few month, it is better to find out the reason and stop.Actually, you may let your son to try the summer course first and see how it goes.

Hope these info. may help you!
