Anyone heard of "Sensory Diet" for 自閉症 /專注力不足?

My son has attention problem and receiving private occupational therapy.  The therapist told me that there is a technique/treatment for 自閉症 /專注力不足which has been proved to work well on training attention.  It is something like assessing what kind of sense the child need and provide to him. Just like they are hungry for the sense and if we feed them, they will be able to calm down and concentrate.  Does anyone have experience on that?  Does it work?

Bobomum,

I just attended the course of "Sensory Integration" provided by Heep Hong.  The lecturer talked about the problems that may arise if children has deficiency in SI.  Occupational therapy is to provide training to these children to overcome the problems that resulted from the deficiency of SI.  Most of the autism have the problem of SI, e.g. hypersensitive to noise or certain material, hyposensitive (i.e. low sense) to painful etc.  Instead of stopping all these stimulation to the children, appropriate level of stimulation + training is recommended to provide to these children and therefore a SI menu is required.  But the course did not touch how to design the menu yet.  I think it is technical and not possible for parents to design on their own.  Your OT should be able to advise you what's the SI problem of your child and what kind of training and stimulation will be appropriate to him.

I have attended the parent cert course on SI by Heep Hong. the course provides samples of Sensory menu, and ask you to write yours.

One of the  item in the menu could be wearing school bag on the way to school by the BB himself . Can have effect of calming down. But make sure the weight is not beyond 1/10 of body weight.

By the way, I have just brought a small 弹床 for my son, for sensory training $360 in 吉之岛。Occupationat Therapist would worry about the safety problem. But my son likes very much, good for brain development and calming. And can play game while jumping, like throw a ball into a box, for eye and hand coordination training.

You can buy a big ball for balance training. But I feel that without a video for teaching to use the big ball, it is difficult to do it at home. If anyone has such video, pl kindly tell where to buy.

我個仔個OT有同佢做，個仔一路都有明顯進步，但我就唔知究景係SI效果定個OT其他訓練令佢進步。我估要整體訓練先得。bobomum:你OT冇做?如果你要幫手出聲。 ALAl:我都想要d資料，但我又懶去講座，有資料比我睇吓好嗎？
暑假可以出嚟玩吓。

I have no idea when will be the next course.  I will pay attention to the heep hong website and let you know when they post the information.  I called the heep hong in April to check for the next course and it seemed to be around Sept.  Will keep you informed when I check it out.

ALAL, I am also interested to know the size of  弹床.  Please tell me also.  Do you think heep hong has that video to teach ball game at 弹床?  I think we are attending the same course.  But I am not able to get a seat for the practicing session at Tung Chung centre.  Hope you can share the knowledge of that session after you attend it.

the size of 弹床 is 38 inch for diameter for a person weight up to 150 lbs (it also become my favourite now, easy to get sweat). Your kid can try it in Whampoa branch. But they don't have  stock in the shop now. They have to order from the wholesale. (shop price $400, but I ask for discount of 10%).

I don't see Heep Hong (Shek Kip Mei) has the video for the large ball exercise.

I have attended the Tung Chung session. Just teach to use various tools. But the information we got in the 2 theory lessons should be more important.

The suggestions in the course I think is practicable at home are:
wearing schoolbags
large ball
弹床 (suggested by parents)
those kids afraid to be touched, or have hair cut.., can brush their body with brush or 海绵 during bathing
embrace your kid

The other ways should be too professional for us to do at home.

弹床 is not foldable, but you can detach the legs from the net (legs about 4 inches high only).

Sorry, my notes were borrowed by other friends. Maybe later on.

My son have the same problem of ADHD. We always let him play swing in the park, merry-go-round (you may buy a office chair... WITHOUT CASTORS at home)and 平衡木. It would help. In addition, don't let him take candies(especially chocolate), soft-drinks(esp. Coke) or even milk-powder (drink fresh milk) since sugar will worsen the problem.

Hello HelenMrs.Lau

我的小朋友是ADHD, 除了專注力比較低之外, 還有Hyperactive. 很容易HIGH 起來, 甜食會使他精力更加旺盛, 更難平靜下來, 因糖份是人體精力的來源, 身體把飯,麵含殿粉質的食等化為葡萄糖供應我們的能量, 而且朱古力.可樂含咖啡因更加刺激腦部使它不能停下來,(好像我們成人在疲倦時吃點甜食便能補充體力一樣), 更難使他們靜下來專注他們的學習

You may let the child take Omega 3 or Kwaii which contains DHA to help the child. My son have take the Kwaii start from 2 years old. Especially for Kwaii my son like it very much, so he may have candy and he also takes DHA too.

I give PaPa White Jelly to my boy recently.  I don't know is there any Omega 3 in it, but, I just want to give him som vitamins

I don't know about PaPa White Jelly. We give my boy Kwaii which contains DHA which we hope DHA may help him for improvement.

I really don't know how it works or is it really works, but my boy is getting much much better.  He is diagnose A-features with ADHD since he was 18 months, but he have great improvements . Now he will go to normal primary in 05.

Hi ! i think my son has the Hyperactive.  He cannot sit more than 2 minutes without play.  When he is playing the car, suddenly he will go to find another toys.  He cannot concentrate on the same thing/toys more than 5 mins except we give some food to him.

Everytime, when we go out to restaurant.  He will not sit on the chair.  Sometimes, when he runs around at home, we cannot stop him (like motor) until he want to stop. Do you think he have this problem ?
