Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

I choose st paul's convent for my daughter last year.
The core reason is the requirement for promoting to secondary section.  I hope my daughter can have happier school life.

Keen competition among student and parent will be in Maryknoll Convent.

BTW, where do you live? is you daughter study in SPK or SPN?

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

0611& bbqueen,
We live in TKO. My daughter is now studying in SPK.

0611,
Did your daughter also accept into these 2 schools last year? And finally you chose SPCSPR for yours? What does your daughter feel in SPCSPR? Hard to study? Hard in homework?

Best Regards,

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

The environment is not competitive in St Paul.  You don't need to fight with the others to get a seat in the secondary. All you need is to have the major subjects passed.  Also, they only have 2-3 homework assignments every day. Easy to handle.

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

Yes, agree. Also, SPC is a school encouraging pupils to learn and play happily in their primary school years. My girl is very happy and enjoys her school life so much!

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

My opinion is you may choose Maryknoll if:
1. you live in KLN/NT;
2. you believe that your daughter can get at least up to average academic standard in Maryknoll
3. both your daughter and you are not lazy
4. money is a concern

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

My girl is now in MCS p.1,  here are some first hand information,
1)everyday we have about 5 to 6 items to do.  In which one or two from those are corrections, one would be a letter for parent to sign.  So, if you are careful, no mistake, there is only 2 to 3 homework to do everyday.
2)We don't need to write much.  Only three times for each word. Sometimes only once.  So it doesn't take long.  My girl can finish her homework before she is back from school.  And she can watch some TV before dinner.
3)We have 3 tests each year.  Each test will only test the material being taught during that term.

Downside:
1)We have dictation every week.
2)The average point is extremely high.  Talking about over 85

Hope this will help you.

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

For my girl, she loves her school very much.  Everyday she wakes up in the morning at 6 and get ready for her school bus at 7.  She shows interest in learning.  But she was a little scared when there were some ghost stories going around, yet she insists to go to school.  About her classmates, most of them are nice and smart.  They learn many things and this may be competitive.  But for my girl, this becomes her motivation to learn.  So I think it depends on your girl.
For noble style, not as much, since the school has nothing to do on choosing the students, there are not much "noble" students than those in the private schools.
Hope this may help you

jjhsu,

yes, both school accepted my daughter. and we finally choose SPC.

She is enjoy her school life.  She like the school because she is promoted from SPK.

They only have 2 to 4 homework everyday, which takes around 30min. to 1 hour to finish.

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

0611,
Thanks for your input!
How many and which subjects are required in examination in SPCS?
Easy to follow up?
How is the communication between school and parents?
Frequency?

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

jjhsu,

I'm not sure for the exam, but for the test, there were 4 subjects: Chinese, English, Maths & GS.

At this time, the most difficult subject for them was Chinese.  It takes lots of time to review and prepare for dict.

About the communication between school and parents, I heard from others that classmistress will call if something wrong only. But if you want to ask the classmistress for anything, you can call and she will return your call when she has time.

Re: St Paul's Covent vs Maryknoll Convent

For P. 1 - P. 5 only the 4 subjects (Eng, Chin, Maths and GS) are required to sit for the test (1 test each term). For Exam, only 3 main subjects (Eng, Chin and Maths) are required. The school will take the test mark and project mark for the final grade of G.S in the final term exam.
If you get all pass (pass mark 60), you will guarantee to promote to the next grade.
The communication between school and parents is OK. You have to attend the parent gathering once a year and there is also the Parent day (report giving day). Besides getting her school report, you can also have a little chat with your daughter's class mistress.
But, if there is any special problem or incident of your child, you will also receive call from the school / class mistress.
