Hi,

I am planning to put my child to IS in the future.
From many threads I read, it seems that IS students usually have good reading habit, could anyone here share the reasons behind. Parent efforts, peer influences, or school requirement?

IS parents, Pls share.:

I think the most important is the school environment. For the junior primary, IS would not exert any academic pressure on the kids, i.e. very few homework, very few or no dictation or test.

On the o ...

christf,

Thank you very much for your sharing. It sounds great that IS have systematic reading scheme to help students.

BTW, which IS is your child going?

My boy is now studying at GSIS and before that he had studied at QBS (an ESF primary).  Both schools have a similar systematic reading scheme.

Christf,

A few more questions......

1.From which kinder did your son graduate, how did u find it, good?

2.Why and at what grade did your son change from QBS to GSIS? How do u compare these two IS?

3.How to improve his Chinese, in term of reading or writing?

Thx

Dear OKmom

For Q1, my boy had been studying in a local kinder for K1 and most of the K2 and then switched to an international kinder for the rest of K2 (around 2.5 months) before joining year 1 of QB ...

Christf,

Thx for your prompt response. But for Q1, can u share a bit more of your case, why you switched you son from a local kinder to an IS kinder at late K2? Why do u think it is not suggested to study local kinder or 2 kinders (a local and an IS kinder at the same time) before promoting to IS primary. Pls share.

christf,

Thank your for your valuable advice. I don't like duck-feeding education system, so I tend to put my little girl in IS primary.

Your son passed the P1 interview at QBS after 2.5 month study in IS kinder, he must be smart. Which IS kinder did he study in, was it a good one? Could it be SWCK, cos I know this kinder has K3.

Christf,

Thx for your PM.

Just want to know more about Chinese standard of an IS kid with private tution in Chinese, how do u rate your son's Chinese in terms of oral, reading, writing? I understand it is unrealistic to expect native level, just want to know how much we can do and what we expect from it.

hi christf,

May i know how much does she charge you per lesson?
why do you chose to teach him in mandrain with traditional chinese characters? could you share? Is he learn mandrain and traditional chinese characters in school?

I did also hire a mandrain teacher for my daughter (she just start since August), she hasn't learn how to write/ recongise the chinese character yet, but teacher is teaching her chinese Pinyin, but she didn't find interest on Pinyin and she said it is too boring, she just like to sing those mandarin songs, and she doesn't like to learn this at home, she said she want to attend mandarin lesson at school with her friend together. How did your son feel? did he feel boried? did he attend the lesson with his friend/ silbing at home? I can imagine there is less fun to learn one to one instead a group of people, but i can't arranged her to learn it from outside learning center.
Could you share?

Best regards,
cpmummy

My boy didn't like reading before even I've bought many books at home.  However, he has changed a little bit since he has studied in RC.
1, he has 3 reading lessons related in the school.
2, his class teacher has sent us a lot of handouts regarding reading techiques, and has started a reading scheme this week.  He can get a new book everyday from his class teacher easily.
3, my boy likes to go to Jumping Gym.....he read 1 simple book (once sentence in 1 page) twice, I'll give him 1 token.  If he could borrow books contain "some more words" (3-5 sentence in 1 page) from school library, and read once every night to me, he can have another token.
Besides, I'd request him read the book out, and make discussion after read.  The most important thing is accompany with him to read in the begining stage.

Basically, school has provided a reading hardware (books & lessons) & software (reading program).  For me, I have to use some incentive menthods to encourage him to read. I did use stickers, cutie seals & etc before, trial and error, and finally got the effective way, hope it could be last longer.  I also hope that he could read by himself later, and love to read.

parents are the first teachers to teach reading.

my son reads extensively eventhough he is in local school, because we read with him everyday since he was three.

i am experiementing on chinese books for the younger one. everynight story time is the best to be with him.
