It is really a dilemma for parents in choosing DSS as once the DSS accepts your kids, you cannot join the central allocation.  Some private schools also do not allow you joining central allocation. So if apply DSS/private schools too early, it may not be favourable.

I said that it is a dilemma, so it is really difficult.  For me, I will join the first round school selection based on points, and won't apply DSS so early.  I know that some DSS will accept students through 2 rounds.  I don't know which DSS you like, if the school is already the one you are very keen on, then you don't need to hesitate.  If not, then may apply private schools which will not affect central allocation as back up first.  Just my personal strategy.  Hope other parents can share more ideas.
