Fill in the blanks with  'a', 'an' or 'the'.

1. Susan likes playing ____ violin.
答案是an.  但我查過Oxford elementary dictionary, 用a.

2. Lily is playing _______ piano.
答案同是an.  

有冇人知點解?

I can't help explain the "answers" to you as I think "an" is not correct in both questions.

If you didn't mis-read the answers, I'd be most interested to know the publishing house of this exercise.

I agree "an" must not be the correct answer in both questions.  Seems 'the' should be the answer.  Correct me if I am wrong.

Can't think of any reasons to pro "an".  However, since no context is given, either indefinite and definite article works.  If the question is which article is WRONG, "an" is the answer for both questions.  

1. Susan likes playing the violin./Susan likes playing a violin.

2. Lily is playing the piano./Lily is playing a piano.

"the" is the correct answer for the two questions.

Haha, I have another idea.....

1)Susan likes playing  the violins. (because of the words 'likes'; I think she likes all kind of violins, not only her own violin)

2)Lily is playing a piano. ( This piano is mentioned the first time...)

oh my god! The word 'likes', because of 's' doesn't mean plural here....but becoz of third person, so use likes. If I/you/we/they, then use like. He/she/or person's name use likes.

I guess your english standard must be very limited. hope you don't mind i say that. Since you said this is your silly idea.

I think you misunderstand singlemum.

She is not emphazising on the "s" as a plural, but that "She likes".

I know how to use the 'Like+s = is for the third person', maybe my explanation was not good.
我意思是說: 因為 likes 解作 喜歡... 喜歡小提琴, 應該包括自己的和 其他的小提琴, 所以我在violin後面+s.

不應只是單看動詞, 就去笑人; 大家學下嘢姐!!

學音樂的同學可能會知，musical instrument 前面的 article 用法是不同的。一般習慣是用the的，即是"He plays the piano" 和 "He plays the violin"。
