English

The following answer was marked by my son's teacher on a worksheet.

A passage was given in the worksheet and one of the sentences was:

"The car is red."

The question is : Is the car green?
My son's answer is: No. It is red.

The teacher put a cross on the worksheet and marked "No.  It is not red."

I don't think my son's answer is wrong.  What do you think?

MP 寫道:

I support the teacher.

The answer can be :

No, it is not green.
or
No, it is'nt.  It is red.

Here is a reference from "ractical English Usage" by Michael Swan (Oxford University Press):

"In English, yes is used with affirmative sentences and no with negative sentences."

Re: English

That depends on whether the teacher is teaching "lively" English or "Dead" English.

The child's answer is not "wrong"! Even if the class was in the course of practicing such sentence pattern, the teacher should at least point out that the answer was not wrong but was not in the required format/pattern.

In the real world, every will straightly say, "No, it is red."

Re: English

I get confussed then.

Just looked up in the Oxford Dictionary.  It read:

NO  interj (used to give a negative reply)
"Is it raining?"  "No, it isn't."
"Haven't you finished?" "No, not yet."
"Are you still a student?" "No, I've got a job now."

The last sentence is not in the standard format/pattern.

Sorry for bothering you for such a trivial thing.
