Fine Motor
Fine Motor: Use of the hands to increase skill, precision, and smaller movements.
* practice tracing or writing with a squiggle pen
* paint rigatoni noodles with stripes on their ridges with a marker, then string them on some yarn
* draw/write with fingers in shaving cream/whipped cream on the
mirror/table
* playdough or theraputty games
* trace letters shapes on carpet samples with index finger
* apply lotion massage to the hands
* squeeze balls, i.e; the small stress balls
* writing on the chalkboard, erasing the chalkboard
* poke small holes into a paper plate and then string a yarn through
the holes
* practice putting clothes onto small human toys, i.e. dress up
babies and barbies
* board games that contain small pieces, i.e. battle ship, bright light
* have the child cut out cards for valentines, Christmas, etc
* clipping clothespins on containers, may add faces to the clothespins or holiday decoration to make it more interesting
* drawing with pencil on clayboard
* have child squeeze/pinch clay/playdoh/theraputty prior to a
writing activity
* firm hugs
* gentle handshakes
* use a stapler or hole puncher on sheets of paper
* push me-pull me
* have child cut materials such as clay, straws, sandpaper, felt, etc
* dress up
* wheelbarrow walks
* self imposed walks
* folding laundry
* helping with kitchen duties, i.e. cooking, putting food on the table
* filling containers with rice, sand (anything small) and put another object inside to find
* log rolls on the floor
* create play dough with flour and water
* trace sandpaper letters with an index finger
* drawing with hands in sand, oatmeal, stones, etc
* encourage child to begin to play a musical instrument, i.e.
guitar, piano
* play marbles
* water play- water squirters, squeezing wash clothes and sponges,
helping to wash the car or table
* writing on the lines
* cutting on lines with scissors
* pick up sticks
* puzzles
* bead stringing- string various types of beads made out of wood,
clay, cheerios, fruit loops on pipe cleaners, shoe laces, string
licorice, etc
* jacks
* games- video/computer games with joy sticks or a mouse, learning
to type with two hands, board games with moving pieces around the
board (chutes and ladders)
* throwing a ball at a target activity |
