Net Teachers有甚麼優劣？

Dear All,

女兒就讀一間直資學校，幸運地上英語課時差不多全是 NET Teachers 教導的。最初我曾為此寄以厚望，以為 NET Teachers 可以發揮非常大的效力。到現在，我女兒已經是五年級學生了，英文確實是不錯，但實際上她的英語大部分是在家中跟我學習的，反而學校淪為配角， NET Teachers的貢獻反比不上我自己。

總體而言，我女兒學校的學生中英語能力有非常強的，但亦有極弱的，似乎跟一間普通的 Band 1尾的小學沒明顯的分別，甚至有部分家長認為學生普遍英文甚差。以我的觀察，NET Teachers 最大的好處似乎只是在 Listening 而矣。

大家有何見解？

我記得"黃巴士"有個咁既故事:

①麦唛上餐馆要了个豆沙包。

②吃过了豆沙包，麦唛依然肚子饿，于是再要了个硬面包。

③吃了硬面包，麦唛饱了，却随即懊恼起来：“啊！原来我吃硬面包才饱的……早知如此便不用吃那个豆沙包！”

④次日，麦唛再到餐馆。这回他一坐下便要了个硬面包。

⑤可吃过硬面包后，麦唛奇怪地发现肚子还未饱。

⑥于是他又要了个豆沙包。

⑦“哎呀！这次是吃了豆沙包才饱，那个硬面包却是枉吃的了！”

⑧麦唛每次都吃错包，心里又迷惘，又不平。为了寻求什么时候吃什么包才饱的规律，麦唛综合了掌相术数、统计科学，经过了一番钻研，麦唛终于作出他的第一次预测；五月二十六日戊时——硬面包！

⑨五月二十六日戊时，餐厅里的人都因一声呼喝而受惊吓：“老板娘！来个硬面包！”

⑩……结果如何，也不用细说。紒紜矠屡遭变幻，麦唛心灰之余，同时得出了“面包”这种东西，根本上就不适合他吃的大道理。

“老板娘！快给我别的东西吃！”紒紝矠老板娘端上一碟什锦糕饼，有柠檬夹心、奶油酥饼、巧克力果仁威化……麦唛怎么也想不出要吃哪块才饱，一时心慌意乱，竟晕了过去。

我相信你說的NET Teachers是不會廣東話和中文的。因此你要比較的是用雙語老師或是用只會英文的NET Teachers的好懷。用NET Teachers有很多好處，但有三個最大的缺點：

第一，就是不理解廣東話和英語在語音上的分別。接受過語音訓練的雙語老師由於較掌握兩者的分別，較有效幫助學生解決『講』的問題。英語主要是voiced sounds和有很多vowels，而廣東語就主要是voiceless，而字詞的聲調有一定的高低值。

第二，就是不理解中文和英語中的句字結構和文法上的分別。雙語老師較有效地針對本地學生常犯的錯誤去提升寫的能力。

第三，就是不理解學生英語字彙不足而做成的閱讀困難。雙語老師可以為英語字彙加上中文解釋，加快學生了解較深的生字。

當然NET Teachers有很多優點，但很多時由於課程只跟隨教統所定下的方法和範圍，而發揮不出NET Teachers的優勢。例如NET Teachers的Social English遠比Local Teachers強，但課程沒有幫young learners去master English in social situations。又例如在學過去式時，很多local teachers都不能分辨-ed ending的不同發音:/d/, /t/, /Id/，但這些都不用教。又例如，NET Teachers可引領學生認識英美文化，價值觀等，但現有的課程是不會帶出語言背後的文化。......

My experience with NET teachers is different from eviepa.  I feel that when NET teachers are restricted under local school cirriculum, they cannot teach upto their full potential.

NET teachers can teach much better in international schools using the more interactive approach and international cirriculum.  They "teach" more interestingly, provide more international cultural aspects and knowledge to lead the students to think and ask, use different methods to arouse interest.

Besides, NET teachers (western ones) like to use much more encouraging methods to motivate the students, which is very effective.

Facing NET teachers, students will naturally speak in English or Mandarin to them, no need to force them or mark down the no. of times they have spoken in English.  This just comes naturally.

One more thing, I find western teachers teach particularly well in other subjects - Science, Geography, History etc.  It becomes so much more interesting than learning these in traditional local schools.

Of course there are some good teachers and some lazier teachers, which is the same case as local teachers.

Yes! You're right! Some of my NET friends complain about exactly what you said. When NET were trained in their own countries, many of them were not taught to teach structure (punctuation/grammar/synthetic structures, etc). Instead, they are taught to bring language into other subjects like geography/history/science. Therefore, when facing Asian students, they may not be able to apply what they've learned into their teaching!

Unfortunately, under a formal school setting, there's nothing much that NET's could do to amend the situation. However, if you're hiring a NET on your own, it is definitely a good idea to ask him/her read with your child. Ask them to read newspaper/magazine with your child, and you'll be amazed how lively the lesson can be.

你講的其實是對的﹐以前我在香港讀書﹐學校都有分開老師來教英文﹐GENERAL ENGLISH 用本地的﹐ORAL 用NET﹐這樣兩者的功用才能發揮得最好。

你已經做了補救工作﹐不用太擔心。至於你學校是不是BAND 1尾﹐其實好難講﹐有些BAND ONE 頭的中學用同一方法教﹐效果都是差不多﹐尤其在作文方面﹐有很多時學生GE份卷好高分﹐然後COMPOSITION好低分﹐但同一NET教﹐原因是他們EXPECTATION跟一般的有出入﹐但又不一定覺得有需要提醒學生。。。如很多香港孩子錯的句子﹕

ME AND MY FAMILY。。。。
I FULFILL MY PROBLEMS。。。。

這些如果老師不加以提醒﹐同學可能會不停錯﹐如果這些錯給LOCAL TEACHERS 看﹐他們會知道問題所在﹐也可能會明白孩子想表達什麼﹐但NETS 看﹐他們應該看不懂了。

i also found out that male NET is not as good as Female NET.

i employed the male NET for the son one-to-one teaching, but the male NET only play and read book to him. nothing interesting.

As from the son's school, we meet a male NET before, he is from the UK and the style is much more formal. really lack of love to the childs. My son said that he always get mad if they are naughty.

To final, whenever male or female NET or Chinese teacher, the most important is care and love the childs.

我個仔之前Ｄ英文很差，我請左英國人教佢英文，佢既英文進步好多，因外國老師教得比較生鬼，用ＳＴＯＲＹ　ＢＯＯＫ，一切ＧＲＡＭＭＡＲ都唔教，但果陣時都好細，都未教ＧＲＡＭＭＡＲ，隻鬼大部份係讚，話佢Ｄ英文好叻！亞仔真係覺得自己好叻！有左自信心，跟住隻鬼成日話病，最鍾意星期五，ＳＨＯＯＴ個e-mail，就唔來，e-mail果Ｄ英文無ＧＲＡＭＭＡＲ＋串錯字.
不過我覺得學好一種語言要有興趣同語境，講得好自然寫作唔會太差，只係會唔太差，ＧＲＡＭＭＡＲ係要熟讀＆操＋。

另一問題就是應否高薪招聘他們？還是把這筆款項用作培訓本地英語老師呢？

既然有優點亦有缺點，咁當然要Local Teacher，又要NET Teacher。唔係要NET Teacher，就不能要Local Teacher呀！又或者要些識中文和廣東話的NET都得。最重要是學校的課程正，切合教的老師和上課的學生。Local Teacher和NET Teacher應該可以在教學上合作。

應高薪招聘他們，亦應培訓本地英語老師。不能做一樣，就話唔可以做第二樣。

maybe you are just unlucky that you only got net teacher in school,

my son got both, both are fine. net teacher are more positive in attitude to student- encouragement is always found in their comment, I think that is good.

最重要是學校的課程正，切合教的老師和上課的學生。

And, no matter NET or local teachers, they can teach with "heart".
