Please bear in mind, in Canada, it' English speaking environment. It's no need to learn as the English grammer will inject to their brain automatically. My friend said they even did not learn phonics or phonetic when they were kids. It's inborn
However, in HK, this is just the opposite. I think no harm to learn a bit and then read lots of books.
You know what, in Australia, my friend sends her kid to learn PTH. She's native Australia. She told me she spends 3 hours every Saturday to learn it and there is a lot of homework. I think it may be a trend already. My boss also sends her kids to tutorial classes to learn Chinese. Same as what we do: we send our kids to learn English.
So it really depends what your mother tongue is.
