Based on the hypothetical situation, the 3 students differ only in subjects taken and the scores. In case the total scores are very marginal, I would say student 1 may not even be granted an interview.Though Biology is preferred, it is absolutely not mandatory and I do not see it as important to make up the 1 mark shortfall. There are quite many medic students not having taken Biology. So I think student 1 stands a less chance. However, I would suggest you let your kid study what he/she is interested than just for making the grades.

你講得好正確, 向來中大各科都係將差唔多分數既人分為幾group, 然後interview, 同一group(當然當事人唔知)人在interview時既表現可以定生死, 當然, 都要成績差唔多先得, 成績比較差的, 雖然有得interview, 都要有能起死回生三寸不爛之舌, 先可以「講」個學位返嚟。

不過，按樓主的這個假設性問題的假設性情況：(1) 和(2), (3)同學並不是同分，是少一分。在這個假設性情況之下，3位學生面試夾埋其他core 是同分、其餘3 個elective 是(1)同學較差，理論上只剩一個位的情況下（即3人並不是狀元級），(1)同學係得唔到學位。(1) 同學有science subjects 的優勢理論上只能在面試得分上面反映，按樓主的假設性情況，(1) 即係面試其實較弱，或者是他core subject 較弱，science subject 已幫他提高了分數和(2),(3)一樣。cow 網友的解答好清楚，只是樓主的假設性情況實際上會唔會咁樣發生啫。

Through interview.
Without hard and fast rules as published, the selection job is just impossible. Interview is the only mechanism which provides a very limited room for manoeuvre for the DSE-route students.

表面分數就係2，3比1高1分, 但學院內計法會有所不同, Science 科會有Bonus 分, 即有個Factor x分數, 結果可能1還會比2,3高分. 如果2／3跟1相差不是1分, 舉例是3，4分, 咁就算計factor, 2/3都會Win ！

中大港大都有面試，不過取態不同，港大主要看那個不適合，踢走不適合的，中大主要是看那個喜歡，落足嘴頭。

港大收生後，高低分一視同仁，中大為吸引高分生，提供種種優惠，例如設立甚麽環球醫學課程，吸引尖子。港大做法是：我和全球頂尖學院都有聯絡，你能到那裡交流，看你的努力。

所以，如果以為港大只看分數，分數就是大爺可能表錯情了。

大家幫子女揀科一定要清楚計分方法, 不要用理性分析, 計分是數學題, 不是分析題. 佢話一個西瓜重0.5Kg就0.5Kg, 一個橙重2Kg就2Kg. 讀engineering佢地話core maths重過M1/M2就重過.

Based on the 2013 results, we estimate that students will require a total
HKDSE score of 41 points to be offered an interview in 2014. After all interviews are conducted, the Faculty will prepare a ranking list based on both the academic results and the assessment at interview. It is possible that a student with a better interview performance will be ranked above another student with a slightly better total HKDSE score. When students have the same rank after interview, HKDSE performance in English, Chemistry and Biology will be taken into consideration.
