UK Alevel 選科

我女2017年 9月轉校讀sixth form, 剛收到新校選科資料！學校話GCE reform 後每學生只揀三個學科，而另外再揀一個core curriculum.  

Core curriculum 中可揀Global Perspective and Independent Research (GPR), Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Maths, other Languages, Young Enterprise (YE) 嘅其中一樣

有冇家長嘅子女讀過以上 GPR, EPQ or YE 可以分享一下呢科實用性及難度，因為呀女寫paper 及research都一般般！謝謝

GPR簡稱是全球視野和獨立研究項目，由IB的CAS，EE和theory of knowledge 參酌設計出來，目的在提升論文寫作及技巧，並培養對時事的關注等，難度問IB狀元，因ib考6科，最高7分=42分十3分(CAS,EE及know.) 約2000 word essay,15 min presentation,5000 word independent research proj.     EPQ是專題研習科，課題加以研究及演講，有助入心儀大學，多見名校有，如burgess hill girl

我冇做過 EPQ ，不過我班同學仔有做，因為我地讀 Linguistics，佢地 A Level 有修 English Language，一個就做 Accents in Disney Characters，一個就做 Discourse in Feminism，呢兩個 EPQ 到 Year 2 Linguistics 果陣會好有用。

EPQ 係畀機會你認清自己心儀咩科同邊個範圍，如果將來讀果科範疇有你 EPQ 有關固然好，但係如果做完 EPQ，發現自己原來對果個範疇唔係咁熱誠的話，早發現總好過到讀大學讀到半路先發現。

我個仔今年year 12，已讀緊5科（打算mid term break 後 drop 一科），佢學校好鼓勵做EPQ, 話對UCAS 好有用。佢亦已sign up with selected topic.

Nope. They don't count EPQ as one subject in current A level syllabus. And my son is going to drop History after Feb

佢係幾academic 的，也頗有野心想報 top universities, 學校要求/advise 要起碼讀4科，and 非常推介做EPQ，話對UCAS 很有用。阿仔自己主動sign up,又自己報咗好多extra activities / competitions around physics / engineering, 亦已開始做extended reading.
我好高興阿仔自己好積極，即使最後未必成功，過程中肯定已經賺到！

看過一間Sixth Form college 的時間表,若讀三科的話,有四成時候是空堂. 上堂的時間和你仔的差不多？甘讀三科便很得閒

聽說有學校讀四科的話,一星期只有一堂空堂,所以不可能讀五科,是否代表這學校教學時間多些,賺多啲

我唔知其他學校，我仔學校星期一丶三、五full day,星期二丶四丶六 half day上堂。佢哋如果讀五科有先決條件係兩科math 加 half block chemistry 先得。只有chemistry 提供half block (即係上一半堂）的option,但就subject to 老師同 head of studies 的批准。

我女有興趣讀物理治療，會揀physics同 biology 。學校只準㨂3科主科，最後一科會揀chemistry 或maths！

請問各位過來人， 不計興趣，chem 同maths 邊科比較容易及對將來揀大學學科比較濶？因除物理治療外, 想唸多其他科作後備！

如果3個A*可報医，看小朋友最有信心果科。。。

Math is the basic subject required for all STEM courses in unis, and it would be counted for some humanity subjects such as Economics. Suggest you better pick math

In her school, Maths can be taken as 1 main subject (will take A2 exam) or 1 core curriculum (will take AS exam at the end of 2 years & treated as 0.5 ALevel subject).   If she takes maths as core curriculum, then she can choose Chem as the 3rd Alevel subjects.   Any ideas  if Unversity recognises AS level maths for STEM courses?

Seems like all STEM courses require full ALevel Math? I.e. Upto A2. And specific subjects would say Further Math is highly recommended !

Just finished the parent evening at my son's school. His math teacher advised that he should even consider stretching the number of modules of double math from 12 to 15 for applying to the most competitive courses and unis in UK!

And my son's classmate who plans to apply for Law in unis just said even Law courses would look for A level Math !

The most important consideration is whether your daughter loves Maths or Chemistry. Students can have a better chance to get good results in subjects they are really interested in.

From a pragmatic point of view, as Ruby1219 has said, Maths provide a broader choice of programs in unis than Chemistry. In addition, it is better to take 'full' Maths (i.e. A2) rather than AS Maths.


Besides engineering, finance, economics, many business-related programs, and law, lay emphasis on good results in Maths.
