Hello, I am a citizen of Australia and immigrated to Sydney when I was 9, so I finished started term 1 in P4 in HK.

First of all major of single degree in Australia for bachelor is only 3 years vs. US being 4 years. As for the UK I think it is also 3 years. Australian universities are getting more and more expensive because there's a large proportion of overseas students attending. So it is very profitable for all universities (with good or bad reputation) to attract these students who wish to get an English environment education. Also for a while Australia had a more lenient policy for students upon their graduation from their university to obtain permanent residency status. Vs. say UK or Canada. Also Australia allows for a 6 months visa that allows students who graduate to work in Australia which is a bonus too.

I graduated from Sydney University (class of 06) studying Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Arts. But I dropped arts later.

In Australia you can study two degree simultaneously e.g. a Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Arts together and it only takes 5  years altogether.

For example for my course at Sydney University the fees for international students are now higher. This is a really popular course, when I started in 2003, lots of international students as studying accounting meant it was easier to get permanent residency. The annual cost is now AUD 38000 excl student admin levies, living costs and spending monies and compulsory health insurance and flights etc.  http://sydney.edu.au/courses/bachelor-of-commerce

Note in Sydney, lots of mainland students and they all study pretty hard!
AU Citizen, lived in Sydney for 18 years. left HK P.4 Term 1, 9 years old, studied in Sydney, attended USYD (Bachelor of Commerce) and UTS (Masters of Marketing). Now working in HK.

I lived in Sydney and stayed with my parents. My parents chose to migrate to Sydney because of the weather, closer time zone and less travelling between HK and Australia. Also we had god-parents who were Australians who are very friendly. Australian universities in the capital cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane will be more expensive. With Sydney being the MOST expensive.

Unfortunately in Sydney, unsure about other states, being an international student you CANNOT get student discount on travel.

But I think I would break down the costs this way,

All in AUD

1. Food: Assume $10 per meal - yearly (student it may be cheaper on campus but I would say $8-12, so $10 as average) - Yearly 11000
2. Transport: $10 per return trip - yearly 3700, obviously depending on where you live.
3. Rent: Normally you share a flat with 2-3 housemates. Assume max you pay 400 per week - yearly 20800
4. Personal expense or entertainment: assuming a budget of $100 per week yearly 5200

total: AUD 40700, annually using 5.5 as forex rate. About HKD 223000 per year. But you know, you can costs if you don't spend on entertainment.

I am unsure about homestay option; but from what I heard homestay means you save on meals by a lot.

Obviously your child can work in Australia but there's a limit to the number of hours you work. In Australia it is best to live close to campus, most of the overseas students don't live on campus, just close to it.

Actually my parents also chose Sydney as there were more Chinese, people are more comfortable around people they know. Also Sydney has the best job opportunities because it is the largest city, so it does mean an enclave of Viet, Chinese, Koreans, Indians etc etc. If I personally have a choice again to migrate etc, I prefer Melbourne as it is less expensive and public transport in the suburb and central business district is better and still comparable job opportunities and a much fairer education system for the public sector.

USA college prices are very different. Public vs, Private. Also the major difference is in the way the undergraduate and postgraduate degree structure and area of study.
UK, Canada, NZ and Aust, you can study a professional degree (law/ medicine/ dentistry/architecture/ business/ econ/ finance/ physiotherapy etc etc) in your undergraduate degree.

HK students are very strong in science and maths, they like picking the above options. For example in above countries except for US, you can get a business degree with 2 majors, e.g. Finance and Accounting within 3 years.
However as the US has an education system with a heavier focus on liberal arts learning, it is more likely that you pick a science or arts degree or  psychology or history degree first and a lot of the top universities only have the above professional degree as postgraduate law schools. As US undergraduate is 4 years and post graduate 2 years, it means a total of 6 years of studying vs 3 years in the other countries. There are obviously exception to the rule, e.g. NYU has Stern which offers undergraduate business degrees.

But also I think in US, the cost of living is a lot lower due to cheaper rents and food.
