(1) Personal Statement and Interview are important components in the application process of admission to US colleges.
(2) For NJ applications to medical schools in Hong Kong, as you know, applicants come from different education system such as IB, A-level, US-AP etc. It is difficult and unfair to compare NJ applicants simply on their academic performances in different public examination. As far as I know, the admission tutors therefore look for more information about the applicants from their personal statements and the performance in interview. Needless to say, they would consider their ECA and see how the applicants make use of their time outside classroom.
(3) For the JUPAS applicants to the medical schools, it is relatively easier for the admission tutors to compare their academic ability. So it is fair to rely more on their performance in the DSE. For borderline cases, the admission tutors would also consider their personal statements and performance in interview and their ECA, just like the factors they would consider in case of the NJ applicants. In other words, there is no harm for JUPAS applicants to present a strong personal statement and demonstrate their knowledge of the medical profession during the interview.
(4) Nearly each book on how to write a personal statement for the application for medicine would give you about 50 to 100 examples of successful applications to UK medical schools.
(5) The book on interview would let you know many things you do not know about the medical profession, what doctors would do etc. For example, the admission tutors would ask you whether nursing is a health care profession. Your answer should be "yes". The admission tutor would ask you "why do you not apply to "nursing" but apply to "medicine" since both are health care profession, Unless you have the preparation, usually the applicants could not perform well on this question, You will be amazed by the sample questions which may be asked and the proposed answers to those tricky questions. If your son can read the books, certainly he could acquire much knowledge about the medical professions (which are similar in UK and HK).
Good Luck!
