My son told me that most (about 80%) HKU JD graduates can work in White Shoes, Wall Street firms, Magic Circle, Silver Circle and City firms. The salary of a trainee in such firm ranges from HK$45,000 to HK$55,000 per month. After they complete their training, the starting salary for a solicitor ranges from $65,000 to $80,000. Some even pay better,
He continued that one needs not be jealous about their monthly salary because they have to do long working hour. Sometimes, they are required to work on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. If one views the salary with reference to the hourly rate, the salary of those foreign firms may not be so "high" when compared with those from local firms.
My son also told me that City U graduates could work in those foreign firms so long as you have the ability to do so. Last year he interned with a Wall Street firm. His immediate supervisor (a partner) is a graduate of City U.
