I was a primary 6 student in 1970.
my Chinese teacher asked us to buy 2 Chinese books about those classic Chinese articles like what professor chan has mentioned in his article. there are minimum explanations alongside the classic Chinese. the teacher explained the meaning of those famous articles to us and demanded us to recite them.
in hindsight, even when I took my al in 1977 [I studied science subjects], I had no regret that my primary teacher had taught us those classic Chinese article.
we could appreciate the beauty of the classic Chinese. it does not matter that we might not able to write the classic Chinese in our daily communications for many reasons. people love beautifully things, aren't we? our classic Chinese is one of those indeed!
furthermore, we are learning Chinese history at the same time when we read those classic articles, like political situation, white horror, philosophy, current issues; men and women, officials or ordinary citizen fighting for justice, corruption, clever kings and stupid kings, etc. you name it, the classic Chinese articles have it.
