Principal,
I fully agree with you that the school and the teacher are striving the best to improve the Chinese level in TSL. Take for the case in P.1 2nd term, in additional to the regular textbook &wb, there are 2 supplymentary ex. and 2 PTH tx. & wb.
Personally I think the family also need to cooperate with the school to improve the Chinese capability of the kids.
A few points I want to highlight:
- Pinyin: this is the building block of Chinese Mandarin and is extremely important, just like English ABC..However I have a feeling that majority of the P.1 kids still can't manage well.
- The environment of speaking Mandarin: If I remember I read a report and it mentioned that in general, the TSL students are not active in answering questions in the Chinese class in Mandarin.. This is also because the fundamental is not strong enough.
So, my suggestion is that:
- the kids need to strength the Mandarin and Pinyin capability at the beginning. A few things are what I'm doing:
- have my son attending the good Pinyin class (even though we already lived in Beijing for 2 years)
- Look up the Chinese dictionary when we're not sure the pronounciation
- read books with pinyin (my son can read most of the words now)
- listen more, speak more Mandarin
I hope that with the School and the Family effort, a few years later, we can hear the comments that the TSL's students, both English and Chinese capabilities are excellent!
