My days of Grammar School hunting has been completed as my son has started Y9at a Grammar school last September. There are many good grammar schools in the U.K., the top one being QE in London and many in Kent, Dartford is one of them but they have no boarding; only day school.
For any one who is looking for boy Grammar School for Y7/Y9 entrance.
I recommend the following boarding schools:
Adams near Birmingham - 3 hours away from London Euston
Royal Grammar School High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire - a few train stations from London Marylebone Road
Reading School ( weekly boarding only) in Reading- one train station from Paddington

Thank you for the clarification. Manchester Grammar School may have changed its status from state school to independent school, it is still possible for smart kids to study there for free if they pass the entrance test. All selective grammar schools have their selection based on some entrance tests. MGS is so famous that if it accepted you, you should take it without hesitation. You need to be in the top tier in your year to be able to get in. My source told me that more good state schools can be found around London than Manchester. Check out Dartford Grammar School.
