Number is one factor, but access is another factor.
No matter how many students take the examination, if access to the examination is restricted, it is not popular.

If access to the examination is equal, "popularity" could be reflected by the number of students who take the examination.

No. Not true.
Bear in mind that most students that take AP in Hong Kong are international schools students that have eyes for US universities. Many of them have very good grades and would rather go to any US universities but never even care to even apply to HKU or CUHK. I personally know someone that chose a state U (i.e. not even ivy league) and gave up HKU.
Same is also true for IB schools in Hong Kong. Many IB students in international schools do not even apply to local universities. However there are much more very "local" IB schools in Hong Kong. Go and have a look at the IB schools lists. DBS, SPCC, St Stephen are local elite schools. And there are also Creative, Victoria, PLK CKY, PLK NPL. These are all local schools.Their students would put universities in Hong Kong first choices.
So it is an illusion only that IB is more acceptable in Hong Kong than other non-DSE curriculum. Just that there are more "local" IB students applying to local universities.

有咩出奇。好似香港唔多承認大陸高考。唔係大陸高考唔得，係香港唔認姐。你又試下拿日本，韓國高考來香港申請，睇下收唔收得好？

My kid had admission offers from 7 US colleges (including the top one) and 2 offers from UK colleges (medicine) on the strenght of her AP results.

She chose to study in HKU.

Another kid of mine had admission offer from HKU (law) on the strength of his AP result but he chose to study law in UK. Finally he studied PCLL in one of the three PCLL providers in Hong Kong.

AP is a college entrance qualification recognised by most, if not all, top top top colleges in the world.

It is absolutely and definitely not true that "最幣係本地大學唔多like AP 呢". On the other hand, the local colleges like very much AP applicants because they want diversity in the campus. There were about 10 applicants in my kid's classs to apply for admission to HKU several years ago. All of them were admitted by HKU and 9 settled at HKU.

何謂IB？

全名是International Baccalureate，1968年創立於日內瓦國際學校，當時是專為一批跟隨父母因為外交、經貿等工作關係而居無定所的學童設計。先有預科課程（DP，Diploma Programme），到94及97年才陸續開辦中學（MYP，Middle Years Programme）及小學課程（PYP，Primary Years Programme）。

香港有多少間IB學校？

根據國際文憑組織http://www.ibo.org/資料，全港共有45間開辦不同程度IB課程的學校，其中25間提供PYP課程、8間提供MYP、25間提供DP，當中加拿大國際學校、英基轄下啟新和智新書院、滬江維多利亞學校提供由小學至預科的接龍課程。

是否一定要文理兼讀？

IB強調全人發展，除規定要參與一定時數的課外活動和社會服務外，考生需修讀六科，其中兩科語文及一科數學是必修科，餘下可選兩文一理，或兩理一文，又或一文一理另加一科藝術，譬如音樂、電影、視覺藝術等。

IBDP一試定生死？

不一定，但重考非常困難。首先IB是一個相當年齡歧視的考試，一般不鼓勵超過19歲的學生報考；其次是重考必須轉校，不會有太多學校接受重讀生。每年分別於五月及十一月舉辦兩次考試，及格分數是24分，以每科最低一分最高七分計，另Extended Essay及Theory of Knowledge合共可得三分，最高是45分。

升學途徑如何？

因國際認受性高，大部份學生會往外國升學，也可經Non-JUPAS申請本地大學，收生沒固定名額，視乎該年度學生水平。以李寶椿聯合世界書院為例，今年121名考生（51名為本地生）共獲本港大學合共53個入學邀請，包括香港大學（23）、中文大學（16）、香港科技大學（12）、城市大學（2）。據了解，港大每年取錄近千名Non-JUPAS學生，當中不少屬IB生。由於越來越多尖子報考IB，港生成績相對突出，本地大學在選擇眾多下，將入讀分數定得越來越高，換言之，以IB成績入讀本港大學，將較入讀外國名校更難。

Some overseas universities also request for up to a total of 4 years of high school transcript. My son's school has already provided students (2017 cohort) with their first set of PG this month. Students can now apply anytime to secure conditional offers from universities in Hong Kong, UK, or Canada etc; or firm offers from universities in the US. The earliest offers can be released as early as around December to January (depending on admission policy of different universities). Many universities release offers on a rolling basis all the way until August or even September. The better your PG, the higher chance you get offer early.
