If you ask me, I think the most effective way of improving languages is through reading (both in terms of cost and time management). However my girl prefers to play than to read and thus limits her exposure to languages so I chose to enroll her to extra classes. Many parents may have already heard about this English centre in Wanchai – Words & Deeds Tutorial Centre which holds classes from P5 to F5.
A little info may help you to consider if your girl fits this centre.
- this is a tough centre with very few holidays (i.e. business as usual during most festive holidays)
- no make up class but homework will be posted to you in your absence
- only English is allowed in the centre
- quite a bit of homework including grammar, comprehension, Chinese translation for vocabularies
- monthly writing (need to write outline, minimum words required for each essay, prizes for top 3)
- need to stay behind for any unfinished homework
- dictation every week (usually approx 30 vocabularies, if you have more than 1/3 mistakes, you need to stay behind to rewrite those mistakes)
- listening and grammar quiz in class (small prizes for top 3)
- end of term test (8 classes per term, big prize for top 1, small prizes for 2&3, correction required for bottom 3)
With me so far? Still interested? ok, herewith the logistics:
You need to book for an assessment test.
These tests usually take place in April, May and June each year for enrollment to their summer session which starts in July. Classes are usually full in the first enrollment but there are dropouts from time to time.
They also have a waiting list so good to join their summer session as a trial.
Your girl will have time to cope with their pattern.
I also heard that there were unsuccessful candidates who failed their tests. Best to enroll in either P5 or P6 because dropouts are few afterwards if they manage to survive. My friend’s girl was rejected for a F2 assessment.
Words & Deeds Tutorial Centre, 3/F, Success Commercial Bldg, 245-251 Hennessy Road
(opposite to Hennessy Govt Primary School) 2845-7382 : Mon-Fri 1-9pm, Sat 9am-8pm (they don’t answer during peak season/hours)
What do you think? Sounds like a hell centre for devil parents!
But I know at least 10 SPPC P6 students studying there.
