ESF Parents-----Which Secondary School?

Dear ESF primary parents,

Would you please share your ideas:
Which secondary school your child will go to?
Will you just stay in the current catchment area? Or move to another? How would you consider your choice and move? How would you compare the various ESF secondary schools?

Current or former ESF secondary parents may also share their experience please.

Many thanks!

Re: ESF Parents-----Which Secondary School?

As far as I know, students choose (or are allocated to) secondary schools according to catchment areas.

Don't think there are much difference among the 5 secondary schools.

Dear WYmon,

Yes, students choose (or are allocated to) secondary schools according to catchment areas.
However, they can choose the place to live. Thus,   they might choose to stay in the existing catchment area or move to another.

The 5 secondary schools may have their special features. For example, the IB results of SC are very impressive. One parent in another thread said that IS got many bright students.

I hope parents can share the special strengths of individual ESF secondary school they know well.

Re: ESF Parents-----Which Secondary School?

lulusing,

I also mean that as far as I know, existing ESF students did not move in order to choose secondary schools in another catchment areas. (even if they want to choose another school, can simply use address of another property to apply without moving as usually people own more than one property)

KGV is the oldest school, so it is more famous and well-known and its sport field is attractive.  SC is catching up a lot these years and now as all schools move to IB, SC becomes the pioneer and some people even prefer it more. Island is always the more famous one in HK side.  Due to locations, obviously there are more western kids in IS, WIS... guess you probably know it.

To me, they are all quite good.  Most people will choose the one most convenient to them, and choose the one where most of their best friends go to.  Your kid will choose it, don't worry!

Is your kid studying in ESF?  Seems that you are always asking for advice and seldom share your own opinions.

Re: ESF Parents-----Which Secondary School?

Hi WYMom

Thanks for your active sharing.

My ideas on ESF schools:

KGV
-The oldest school with good academic results.
-Quite a number of Indian, Pakinstan and Japanese(?) students.

SC
-Very impressive IB results.
-Attached with SJS, there will be more and more local Chinese students.

IS
-Always be regarded as a good school.
-Quite many famous persons studied in and were graduated from this school.
-Few local Chinese students relatively.
-Quite many graduates went to top universities.

I know little about WIS and SIS.

My kids will probably go to ESF secondary school some years later. It is not urgent for me to make the decision. I just want to initiate a topic for discussion. Anybody who is interested in my proposed topic may join the discussion.

With regards,

lulusing

To me, I would choose the best/most prefered school and cultural environment instead of considering the physical location of living.

In fact, catchment area is artificial. For example , some areas in Kowloon have just been rezoned and thus are subsumed under the catchment of Island School. Hence, moving or not is not the major concern. If the catchment area of  the target/the most prefered  school is the same as the living place, no need to move. If it is not, moving is a natural way.

For example, if one lives in Tsing Ti and does not prefer his/er kid to go to the ESF school on HK Island, one way to do is to move to another area in Kowloon so that s/he can remain on Kowloon Peninsula. Hong Kong is a small place. I am afraid physical distance is not a crucial factor for social circle.

The conclusion is: I would choose the school first, but not consider the living place.

Hi WYmom,

Is your kid studying in ESF, and will go to secondary earlier than mine? Will you share your further ideas on choosing secondary school?
-----------------------------------------------------

Hope that more parents share ideas on choosing ESF or other international secondary schools.

Re: ESF Parents-----Which Secondary School?

lulusing,

You can choose schools as you wish, only that catchment zones are adjusted every year, allocation of schools is also controlled by ESF. Places are very tight in KGV, SC and Island, and, ESF has very complicated priority rules for the allocation, so you may not get what you want at the end even you move intentionally for it.  Transport has to be considered as most secondary students need to go home themselves.
