Re: Kingston or Yew Chung
My son now in YC P2. I am quite satisifed with the way they teach.First, low teacher -student ratio, 16 students in his class. The school encourages reading very much and each night the kid will get a story book, mainly 'Oxford reading tree', plus the weekly library book (English and Chinese) and the reading corner at the classroom. The school adopts British National curriculum and emphasis on reading, build up vocab, phonics, writing and oral....I appreciate that they really teach something in English. Like this year, the kids are taught how to write a book report, in a systemic way . They introduce the terms 'charcter' 'setting', 'beginning' one by one ...... to let the kids understand the sturcture of a story book. At the same time, similar approach is used to teach the students in writing their own stories. For Chinese, the standard is close to traditional school, even 少少 谷. There is Chinese writing each day, and dictation with 7-8 詞語 per week. The Chinese principal Ms TONG is really serious in the Chinese curriculum and the school even publish their own book. On average 2 Chinese lessons each day, using Potunghua started from P2.
Both campus size of YC and Kingston are not ideal, if compared with Gov't or DSS schools. But I think YC is better as they have three different sites for primary section.Actually, I find the campus of Kent Road 2 quite comfortable and acceptable.
The school is not difficult to apply. But a small number of students would repeat if they could not meet the standard. |
