SOUTH ISLAND SCHOOL CELEBRATES EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF 2023 IB DIPLOMA GRADUATES

South Island School is thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 2023 IB Diploma graduates. In our first full year back on campus, our resilient students achieved  results equal to or higher than our last unaffected 2019 cohort. This IB cohort faced constant disruption to their studies since the beginning of their IGCSE studies 4 years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They had to learn how to quickly adapt to the ever changing circumstances forced upon them. May 2023 was the first year that students had to complete the full suite of IB assessments since 2019 and the IBO made it clear that grade distributions would be returning to May 2019 levels. An incredible 35% of our students have achieved 40 points or higher, demonstrating their exceptional abilities, resilience and dedication to academic excellence.  Please find the overall IB statistics HERE.

I think the average of both is 37. What's the difference that makes one so good and the other not bad?

45er: 3 vs 1
40+: 39.1% vs 30%
Mean score: 37 (tie)
Bilingual diploma: 10 ppl vs 33 ppl

Bilingual Diploma代表兩科語文考A卷（最高級別），其中一個會係英文，另一科唔一定係中文，法文德文西班牙文都可以。RC中文係特別強，多人bilingual diploma 唔出奇呀，佢中學亦無第三語言（應該係？有錯請更正）。SC本身中文較弱，而且有其他語言揀，直程可以揀一個新嘅語言考ab initio。

Receiving a bilingual diploma

A bilingual diploma is awarded to candidates who complete and receive a grade 3 or higher in two languages selected from the DP course studies in language and literature.

Students who gain a grade 3 or higher in studies in language and literature and a grade 3 or higher in an individuals and societies or science subject, completed in a different language, will also receive the bilingual diploma.

唔需要兩科語文考A

中文考A, 其他科用英文考都可以拎bilingual diploma，所以CKY做到90-100% bilingual diploma

在RC & SC都係這情況；兩間學校都只提供Eng A, 因此要達到bilingual diploma, 就只能修Chi A。
有些rare case 可能是日文/法文A。

NAISHK Class of 2023 IBDP results

07 JULY 2023

Our third Diploma Programme cohort from NAISHK achieved an impressive 100% Diploma pass rate which compares very favourably to the global picture of 79%.  This is especially remarkable considering we are a non-selective school.

40% of our students were awarded the Bilingual Diploma for completing the full programme in a language other than their mother tongue. We are so very proud of this achievement.

Principal, Mr Duncan, praised the hard work of both students and teachers in achieving these examination outcomes adding: “I am delighted that our students once again achieved a 100% pass rate and are enjoying such a high measure of individual success despite the significant challenges they have faced throughout both their IGCSE and IBDP studies, challenges which significantly disrupted the normal flow of school life.

Results globally are significantly down on previous years as the examining body, IBO, attempts to re-align the exam outcomes with pre-Covid times.  The global debate about results should not detract from the incredible efforts of students to learn and teachers to teach. Students have worked hard during an extremely difficult time in their secondary education – and we should focus on celebrating their achievements. 40% of examinations were awarded a Level 6 or 7, which is the equivalent to an A or A* at Advanced Level. 10% of our students achieved a world class score of 40 points or above (the equivalent of 4 A* grades), while 30% achieved 35 points or above – the equivalent of three A* grades at Advanced Level. 

We are incredibly proud of all our IB pupils and I would like to congratulate each one of them on their impressive successes. Alongside their IB studies, this cohort have made outstanding contributions to the wider aspects of school life during their time at NAIS Hong Kong.  

We wish them every success as they head off to a wide range of international destinations.”
