請教 double major

同一間大學, 課程A 同 B :

A : 收分較B高, 只有一個major
B : 收分較A低, 但可以 double major

高低係講緊 ~4分 嘅分別, 以 (1-4,5.5,7,8.5) 咁計

興趣對兩科差不多

想問下 :
1.點解要求較低的科反而可以double major？
2.有double major是否有著數 ?

1. 是否容許有 Second Major，對於收生分數的影響較低。
收生人數及報讀申請人的成績對於收生分數的影響高很多。
從另一角度看（玩笑的角度），正正因為收生分數的要求低，順利完成 Second Major 的可能性更高。   

2. 先講缺點：Double degree 才有兩個學位；
Double Major 雙主修只有一個學位。
學位證書/畢業證書只有原來錄取的那一個學位。
成績表上才會有顯示 Major。
每一個 Major 有自己的學分要求、必修課要求 ，     
4年內要完成 Second Major 的話，
自由選修課（用來拉高整體 GPA）所剩無幾。
4年內如果未能完成 Second Major，就是未能完成，成績表上也不再顯示 Second Major，
這個不構成申請 延期畢業的理由，第五年只能修讀總學分所欠的一門、兩門 、三門、四門課等等，讀完就要走人 。

好處：可以將別人的科 declared 為自己的 Major，舉例：QFin，
不然，選課的時候根本就選不上。
當然，受歡迎的科很多時候不給其他人 Major 的 ，舉例：IBGM, Law。

我女入學時係一個major，如year one成績理想可揀double major，佢揀咗
煩惱來了：
1. 為咗要趕得切畢業前讀夠分，佢每一學期都要好努力去reg 科（學校唔會幫你pre reg，亦要就每科pre requisite，又唔會每科每學期都開）有時為咗就major科目，時間表拆爛晒，想reg嘅其他科亦reg 唔到。我女今個semester特登申請申請讀extra credit，拎晒approval，點知發現有兩科reg唔到！激到佢爆炸，而家仲要等department office解難
2. 因core科多了，electives就會少。正常人都會揀d易拎高分嘅elective 拉高GPA（嗯….除非你有遠大理想向難度挑戰）
3. 如果想快人一步或其他原因趕住讀，長假期都會讀。本來係件好事，但分身乏術，讀得出就做唔到工，會影響cv唔靚仔
4. 好了講咗咁耐，其實double major有咩得著？咪就係挑戰自己達成目標囉。如果讀嘅科目有專業牌照，更要攪清楚個double major值唔值得花時間，我女讀咗幾個module ，至發現原來讀嘅double major唔可以掛牌，反而minor可以，即時有中伏感覺。佢即刻轉陣，決定一major+2 minor, 仲好過double major

我仔早年都有研究過，double major 似乎係講出嚟好聽啲，對自己係一大挑戰，而且要遲畢業，我仔話早啲畢業讀多張Master好過。

是什麼意思？

跟QFin 有關的double major 是否指 QFRM?

舉例：
HKU BEcon 可以 second major QFin,
HKU BSocSc 都可以 second major QFin,  
當然，有 selection process, 基本上 M1/M2 要有星。   

純粹憑入學成績（DSE、A-Level）錄取不上 QFin，
這個 second major 就有機會去讀。

在選課系統上，已經 declare Major 的有優先權，
其他人很多時候選不上課，特別是 upper level 的課。
      
First Major QFin 的人其實不需要苦惱 second major 的問題，
最多考慮看看是否 double major Computer Science。

其他科的人 才需要苦惱 second major 的問題，如何豐富自己份 CV，增加搵工的籌碼。   

當然，需要留意有一些組合不被容許，
eg. double major  in Statistics and Risk Management，
HKU Accounting & Finance 亦不能 second major QFin。

一學期5門課，4年共40門課，
中英文 3門課，
通識 6門課，
Accounting major 要 18門課，
已經沒有空間給 QFin major 的 16門課。

選擇 second major 都要看空間。

其實........... 未必。
只有 Double major + Double minor 不太建議以外，
其他的還是看個人興趣及“目的”。
有些時候，很有作用。

讀數學的，去 double major QFin，
讀統計的，去 double major Finance,
讀物理的，去 double major Computer Science，
搵工的道路 好好多。
   
決定 double major 的時候，當然最好找 Academic Adviser 問清楚。

It is perfectly alright to do the minimum requirements in a major without a minor. A minimum
major without a minor is not a less respectable degree than any major-minor combination.

Myth:
I must do a minor or a second major (major 2) to demonstrate a broadened background.
Reality:
You can achieve an equally broad academic training without doing a minor. In fact, an
academic record showing a wide range of elective courses from various disciplines may
provide you with the background training to understand and discuss issues intelligently in
different subjects, and the ability to connect knowledge and concepts across disciplines.

Why choose a minor?
A minor is a structured academic programme for those students pursuing the subject as a
second interest. Here are some of the reasons for doing a minor.
You have more than a casual interest in an elective subject.
You would like to be recognized to have achieved a certain extent of knowledge
in the elective subject.
The minor can enhance your study major and improve your opportunities for further
studies or career.
In most cases, you can enroll in the same courses listed in the curriculum without formally
registering for a minor in that subject. Deciding to do a minor in a certain subject may actually
reduce your flexibility to take other elective courses because of the core requirements and
possible timetable clashes.


What about a second major (major 2)?

A double major in two different subjects bears testimony to the student’s academic ability
and may enable the student to seek career in either area. Here are some of the reasons
for doing a second major.
You have a strong interest in two different subjects.
You have confidence in your ability to study two subjects at the same time.
You are committed to devote much time and effort on study.
You believe the dual major can enhance your opportunities for further studies or
career.
Before committing to do a minor or a second major (major 2), you should ask yourself the
following questions:
Do I have the background and ability to complete the additional course
requirements?
Can I afford the time and effort?
Would the minor or second major enhance my academic training and career
prospect?
Does the minor or second major agree with what I want to achieve for my
university learning?
Would doing a minor or a second major actually hamper my intention to broaden
my horizon in even more disciplines?
Are there other endeavours I would rather devote my time?

舉例：

哦，原来是HKU 有咁古灵精怪的“取巧”。

我以为中大CUHK 的QFRM 才是double majors。

我兒子是Major QFin ，minor computing science。

其實........... 未必。

攞住hku本 programme brochure 睇, 見有些科可以 declare 2nd Major and/or Minor before Year 4, 但有啲科就只可以 declare Minor. 可以 2nd Major 的科又收分低過只可 declare Minor 的.

現在又冇可能知道孩子會否 2nd Major, 只有到時佢自己先知道．其實應該點解？不可以 2nd Major 的科應該係次選, 可以 2nd Major 的係首選, 因為可以到時再可選擇
