My girl is considering transferring from local school F2 to ESF Y10. She is currently studying Science as one subject and I realise that ESF students already started studying Phy/Chem/Bio as separate subjects since Year 9. She is keen on Science and would like to be able to choose Phy/Chem/Bio at IB level. Therefore she would like to know whether it would be possible for her to choose Triple Science for IGCSE when she joins the school at Y10 (or start at Double and have the chance of switching to Triple), even she doesn’t have Y9 Phy/Chem/Bio?

I would be really grateful if any parents could share their experience or insight. Thank you!

She only intends to choose 1-2 out of Phy/Chem/Bio at IB level, and in order to do so, she needs to take Triple Science for IGCSE. So I would like to know whether she would be allowed to choose Triple Science for IGCSE when she joins ESF at Year 10, given that she has only taken Science as one single subject rather than as three separate subjects (Phy/Chem/Bio) in Year 9.

It’ll be totally fine.

Most ESF Y10 students would take triple Science for (I)GCSE (it’s not that hard), only the students weaker in Science would take double Science.

If the student who finds triple Science too hard, can change to double Science then.

Want to highlight that able to take higher level in IB is subject to igcse score, not related to take double or triple science in igcse.

Starting from this year, ESF students only allow to take double or single science.  My son is the first grade year (currently in Year 11) for this new policy.

Are you referring to IGCSE or IBDP? It’s strange that triple science is not allowed in IGCSE and the host is asking about IGCSE.

IGCSE

My kid, at Y11 of Island School and taking IGCSE exam now, took Phy, Chem and Bio as the 3 sciences subjects.

Is it real?  Why does South Island School only allow Double Award?
My son is also taking IGCSE Exam for Chem, Phy and Bio.  Taking 3 science subjects doesn't mean it is Triple Award.  Do you mind to check with your kid if they are taking Triple or Double.  If Triple, I will complain to South Island.

From West Island School:

About 60% of our students opt for triple sciences.

Currently Triple Science students in Year 10 study alongside Double Science students, only splitting into dedicated Triple Science classes in Year 11. Entries for the IGCSE exams are not submitted until January in Year 11 so there is room for changes between Double and Triple courses. About 60% of our students opt for triple sciences.

Thank you for the information.
I sent an email to my science teacher, she confirmed they only offered Double or Single Award.  It is unbelievable.  Except the words irresponsible and lazy, I can't find a better word to describe.  Pissed Off.

Thank you for the information.

Your information is absolutely WRONG.

I checked the South Island School website with their latest IGCSE curriculum. They have the Edexcel Separate Award, Double Award and Single Award pathways in Y11.

The Edexcel Separate Award pathway offers 3 IGCSE grades 9/9/9 (please see photo below).

At South Island School, instead of calling them Triple/Double/Single Science in IGCSE, they now call it Edexcel Separate/Double/Single Science.

Nothing is changed except the name.

Thank you all so much for the information. Seems like different schools have slightly different terminologies. I shall check with the relevant school then. Thanks again!
