ECONOMICS MAJOR GPA REQUIREMENTS Students in the Major in Economics require a minimum GPA of 2.3. This applies to the admission/transfer, promotion, and graduation requirements.
Promotion Requirements Promotion from year to year in the Economics major requires a GPA of at least 2.3 on a minimum of ★9 on the most recent assessment of academic standing.
Graduation Requirements Graduation with a Major in Economics requires a graduation average of at least 2.3 with an average of at least 2.3 in all senior-level Economics courses. Students must also meet the promotion requirements in their final year/term in order to graduate.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do Spring/Summer courses count towards my GPA? Spring/Summer courses do not count towards your promotion requirements - only Fall/Winter courses are calculated. Spring/Summer courses do count towards Graduation Requirements.
What if my GPA for Fall/Winter falls below 2.3? Current majors with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.2 are not eligible to continue in the Economics major, and their major will be changed to “Undeclared.” Students should prepare to complete an alternate major.
Students will also be dropped from any courses they are registered in for Fall/Winter that are restricted to Economics majors. Students can enroll in restricted courses after June 29.
Can I declare Economics as my major in the future? Students who are ineligible to continue in the Economics major, but are eligible to remain in the Faculty of Arts, must complete a Fall/Winter session and achieve a GPA of 2.3 on at least ★9 to be eligible to reapply to the major.
Students who are not eligible to continue in the major will not be granted re-entry to the major on the basis of Fall term grades; re-application to the major should be done after Winter term grades are available.
What if I have previously been Required to Withdraw (RTW) and want to declare an Econ major? Students who have been Required to Withdraw from and wish to declare a Major in Economics must apply for admission to the Faculty of Arts and present one of the following:
1. APGA of 2.3 or higher (minimum ★24); 2. GPA of 2.3 or higher on ★12 or more, after being RTW - to be confirmed Fall 2018 2. ★9 or more, with a GPA of 2.3, in a Fall/Winter session following admission to the Faculty of Arts
What if my Fall/Winter GPA is 2.3 but my GPA on Economics courses that year is lower? You are still eligible to continue in the Major in Economics. However, upon graduation, you must have a GPA of 2.3 on all senior-level Economics courses applied to the major.

Honors in Economics requires a minimum of ★54 and a maximum of ★72 in Economics (at the 200-level and above). The Department offers two different routes or sets of course requirements to obtain Honors in Economics. One route includes advanced training in econometrics and mathematical economics and is appropriate for students contemplating continuing their studies in economics at the graduate level. The other also leads to a specialized degree in economics and requires completion of an honors essay; it is more appropriate for students with different career objectives or contemplating studies in related disciplines after graduation. Students should consult the Department Advisor to determine which route to select. Requirements for the two alternatives follow:
