3. Competitive GPA
Applicants must possess a minimum GPA of 2.3 on that scale in their most recent consecutive Fall/Winter session (September through to April) before their application will be considered. A GPA of 2.3 and possession of the basic requirements does not guarantee admission and historically has not been a competitive GPA. The competitive GPA can fluctuate each intake due to the quality of the applicant pool and the number of spaces available in the undergraduate program quota.

How is the GPA calculated?
The GPA is calculated on the most recent Fall/Winter session (September to April) where a student has completed a minimum of 15 credits. If a student has more than 15 credits, all course work taken will be used to calculate the GPA. Calculations are based on university transferable courses and will include failed courses taken during the Fall/Winter session. Repeated courses, if previously passed, will not be included in the GPA calculation. The U of A uses a custom 4-point grading scale and GPAs will be converted to that scale.

ECONOMICS MAJOR GPA REQUIREMENTS

Students in the Major in Economics require a minimum GPA of 2.3.  This applies to the admission/transfer, promotion, and graduation requirements.

Promotion Requirements

Promotion from year to year in the Economics major requires a GPA of at least 2.3 on a minimum of ★9 on the most recent assessment of academic standing.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation with a Major in Economics requires a graduation average of at least 2.3 with an average of at least 2.3 in all senior-level Economics courses.  Students must also meet the promotion requirements in their final year/term in order to graduate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do Spring/Summer courses count towards my GPA?

Spring/Summer courses do not count towards your promotion requirements - only Fall/Winter

courses are calculated.  Spring/Summer courses do count towards Graduation Requirements.

What if my GPA for Fall/Winter falls below 2.3?

Current majors with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.2 are not eligible to continue in the Economics major, and their major will be changed to “Undeclared.”  Students should prepare to complete an alternate major.

Students will also be dropped from any courses they are registered in for Fall/Winter that are restricted to Economics majors.  Students can enroll in restricted courses after June 29.

Can I declare Economics as my major in the future?

Students who are ineligible to continue in the Economics major, but are eligible to remain in the Faculty of Arts, must complete a Fall/Winter session and achieve a GPA of 2.3 on at least ★9 to be eligible to reapply to the major.

Students who are not eligible to continue in the major will not be granted re-entry to the major on the basis of Fall term grades; re-application to the major should be done after Winter term grades are available.

What if I have previously been Required to Withdraw (RTW)  and want to declare an Econ major?

Students who have been Required to Withdraw from and wish to declare a Major in Economics must apply for admission to the Faculty of Arts and present one of the following:

1.  APGA of 2.3 or higher (minimum ★24);

2.  GPA of 2.3 or higher on ★12 or more, after being RTW - to be confirmed Fall 2018

2.  ★9 or more, with a GPA of 2.3, in a Fall/Winter session following admission to the Faculty of Arts

What if my Fall/Winter GPA is 2.3 but my GPA on Economics courses that year is lower?

You are still eligible to continue in the Major in Economics.  However, upon graduation, you must have a GPA of 2.3 on all senior-level Economics courses applied to the major.

Who can I contact if I have a question about the Economics major GPA requirements?

Please contact the Department of Economics at:   Include your full name and 7-digit student ID number.

Economics [Arts] Honors in Economics https://calendar.ualberta.ca/preview_program.php?catoid=20&poid=19800&returnto=5111

Students planning to apply for admission to the Honors program should consult
BA Honors
for admission requirements. See BA (Honors)
for Faculty regulations concerning the Honors program.
Honors in Economics requires a minimum of ★54 and a maximum of ★72 in Economics (at the 200-level and above). The Department offers two different routes or sets of course requirements to obtain Honors in Economics. One route includes advanced training in econometrics and mathematical economics and is appropriate for students contemplating continuing their studies in economics at the graduate level. The other also leads to a specialized degree in economics and requires completion of an honors essay; it is more appropriate for students with different career objectives or contemplating studies in related disciplines after graduation. Students should consult the Department Advisor to determine which route to select. Requirements for the two alternatives follow:
Honors Route for Graduate Study in Economics
Note:
(
ECON 481 , ECON 482 , ECON 497 should be taken in Year 4).

Uploading your transcripts
Log in to your Student Centre to view details on required documents and deadlines specific to your application.

For uploaded documents to be used for admission evaluation they need to include your full name, the full name of the school attended, dates of attendance, all courses and credit hours taken (including transfer credit (if applicable)) and the date of issue.

Please note that we cannot accept screenshots of your student portal for evaluation purposes.
As a result of COVID 19, we recognize that school boards/education systems have taken a variety of approaches to the high school semester structure (quad-semester, octo-semester, regular semester). To ensure a consistent and equitable process across the different semester structures being used this year, the University of Calgary will accept transcripts for admission evaluation following traditional semester timelines:

•Grade 11 as soon as you apply
•February for any courses completed between September and January
•July for courses completed between February and June.

Students in a non-semestered or linear school will be able to submit interim/predicted grades as per our regular processes.
