I think it depends on what you want for your child. Kcis has a good reputation of its pre primary programme but when your child reaches to primary level, there are more to consider. Esf is ib curriculum and kcis is uk curriculum. As most international schools are now on ib curriculums, it may be easier for your child to move on to different schools in future and the transition easier when your child goes to secondary. And it also seems like taking ib exam will be the trend for international school students and i would want my child to be used to learning on ib curriculum if you decide to follow thru the international school route. Another consideration will be the resources that both schools can provide to their students. Esf is a big academic organisation with a lot of resources and facilities whereas kcis is a sub division of a local school with less facilities than esf (but of course this reflects in the different school fees you pay)No matter what your decision is, congratulations on having both p1 places secured esp i know a place in esf is hard to come by as a few of my friends' children have been turned down.

Yes, I also heard that the ESF kids are quite outspoken and willing to express their opinions.  However, KCIS's kids seems to be stronger in Chinese.  That's why it's hard to choose between these two schools.

This is the dilemma, if you think Chinese is of the highest priority when choosing a school, you are bound to end up in a school with a lot more Chinese ( both students and teachers), and that will result in a more "local culture and values"way than the westernised style ( of course still more westernised than local school). At the end I decided there are more important things than just learning Chinese when choosing a school.

I do not think being outspoken and having good chinese have to be two mutually exclusive qualities.

Can ESF kids have good chinese? I think some ESF kids have good chinese standard. Not talking about those that transferred from local school but genuine home grown kids. The problem with ESF is that they are unable to attract parents that care about learning chinese ---- those parents would choose other schools. And in the end birds of feathers flock together. Those that care about learning chinese would choose other schools. Those that choose ESF simply give up even before trying. Some parents has it WRONG. Some people think that: if I care about chinese then my english would be poor. AND this is WRONG! The fact is, there are real life cases that students can be good at both.

Anyway, this has been discussed many times (probable started talking about this 10 years ago. Lots of arguments, some really rude and insulting if people remembered). So I guess I would rather not drag on and let parents reflect on this point.

"At the end I decided there are more important things than just learning Chinese when choosing a school."

There is never a "just" when choosing a school anyway. I would also not choose a school "just" because of the western environment.
The thing is, why should ESF be classified as a school (or schools) that parents/students need to give up on chinese?

For extended reflection, why should schools that care about chinese (in this case KCIS), give up of training kids to be outspoken.

For further reflection, are there ANY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS at all in Hong Kong that embrace both qualities. That is, they have decent chinese standard (and good English of course) and have outspoken kids?

I think we are not talking about giving up Chinese in ESF, it's just relative to KCIS. In fact there are also discussions on ESF vs FIS, ESF vs GSIS, and people do mention choosing ESF for higher Chinese levels while the other two are like " giving up Chinese".

To compromise, i know some parents hire private tutors to teach their kids Chinese at home or the kids go to some learning centres to learn chinese. To me, i think it's easier to learn Chinese outside school than finding a school that can provide an inspiring and well rounded education.

My kids have been studying in KCIS primary for 5-6 years . School needs students to be disciplined . There are some very high achievers in the school as Chinese families tend to care more about their academics, yet under-achieving students can still survive in the school. There are not many extra-curricular activities, yet you find very strong talents in the field of music, sports and other talents as parents arrange programs outside of school . Hope it helps

Thx for telling me it is just your wild guess.  To your understanding, a genuine IS counts on the turnout rate of Caucasian ?  Does race or nationality counts ?
