‘The Dry Season’ by Kelsi Brew

The year is withering; the wind
Blows down the leaves;
Men stand under eaves
And overhear the secrets
Of the cold dry wind,
Of the half-bare trees.

The grasses are all tall and tinted
Straw-gold hues of dryness,
And the contradicting awareness,
Of the dusty roads a-scatter
With the pools of colourful leaves,
With ghosts of the dreaming year.

And soon, soon the fires,
The fires will begin to burn
The hawk will flutter and turn
On its wings and swoop for the mouse,
The dogs will run for the hare,
The hare for its little life.


Answer the following questions.

1.        What is the rhyme scheme of the last stanza of ‘The Dry Season’? (1 mark)

2.        Give one example of alliteration. (1 mark)

3.        Which two lines form a rhyming couplet? Copy them onto the answer sheet. (2 marks)

4.        The word ‘pool’ usually means there is water, but there is no water in the poem. What does ‘pools’ refer to in line 11 and what kind of poetic technique is this? (2 marks)

5.        Why does the poet mention ‘the dreaming year’ (line 12)? What could this mean in the context of the poem? (2 marks)

6.        The poem is called ‘The Dry Season’ because it comes from Africa where there are only two seasons. From the images in the poem, which season could this poem represent, if it were written about a Hong Kong or a Western country? Give evidence. (2 marks)

7.        What form of poem is this? (1 mark)

‘Cat’ by Alan Brownjohn
Sometimes I am an unseen
marmalade cat, the friendliest colour
making off through a window without permission,
pacing along a broken-glass wall to the greenhouse,
jumping down with a soft, four-pawed thump,
finding two inches open of the creaking door
with the loose brass handle,
slipping impossibly in,
flattening my fur at the hush and touch of the sudden warm air,
avoiding the tiled gutter of slow green water,
skirting potted nests of tetchy cactuses,
and sitting with my tail flicked
skillfully underneath me, to sniff
the azaleas    the azaleas    the azaleas.

Answer the following questions on the answer sheet.

1. Write two examples of alliteration and two examples of assonance in the poem.  (4 marks)

2. What colour is the cat? Why do you think the poet calls it ‘the friendliest colour’? (4 marks)

3. What do the ‘tetchy cactuses’ remind you of? What is the name for this poetic technique? (4 marks)

4. There are a lot of verbs of motion in the poem. Give two examples (1 mark each). Explain why you think the poet chose so many verbs like these   (2 marks).

5. Finally the cat gets inside the greenhouse. Choose one line to show how the cat does so. Copy it onto the answer sheet. What do you think the poet means in the line you have chosen? (4 marks)

係呀, 呢個名單可以幫助你找高小相若水平的作品來看

但我見你需要英詩賞析, 就要另外找書, 希望有高手賜教

要看看孩子領悟能力有多高。有些高小很「懂事」，明白二戰、日本侵華等等的內容，有些則不明白。我自己讀 Eng Lit，有時候連老師都不是太能掌握當中思緒，而且很多「較有深度」的詩大多講關於 feminism、old age、death、war 等等，比較難掌握。

不過可以嘗試看看 TS Elliot 的 Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats。這本書後來就用於 Cats：The Musical 。雖然沒有什麼特別中心主題，但是整本書就是想帶出每隻貓和人一樣，有不同的個性、故事和強弱點，誰體會經歷最多、領悟到
人生的高低起伏，那你就會得到永生。

這本書和 Musical 都很好看喔！一定不會覺得悶。

當然，這個年紀還小，未必能夠理解這一點（也看不出）。
BTW，你那些題目很像我 Eng Lit Poetry Appreciation 遇到的題目

此言差矣！

呢D叫做深度閱讀。雖然小朋友已經去到高小, 普通嘢佢哋當然可以自己搞掂, 但中英文學呢家嘢, 佢哋真係識條鐵咩, 但睇多D又好喎。咁, 就要等佢哋仲聽我哋枝笛時陪佢睇, 等佢哋「學習」如何讀呢類書。


即係, 阿女剛剛去完旅行買咗本紅樓夢原著, 你俾佢睇, 佢係睇唔明的, 因為無標點符號, 所以前十回或二十回, 要我先陪佢睇, 等佢熟悉咗, 佢就可以嘗試自己睇了。一D文學名著, 都係家長一齊陪睇好D, 因為可以指導小朋友如何學習丫嘛。去到中學, 學習模式唔一樣, 都要家長將自己既經驗教會小朋友。好似阿大, 我提示佢上堂jot notes, 同埋將D重點自己整筆記, 佢就有本筆記, 英文、常識自己整本天書, 整理既過程又係一種溫習, 好有用架。

圖書館好多詩集, 通常放係同一位置, 不如你自己去望望。我都會借的, 當閒書比阿女睇。最近我女學校book club叫左我女買左“Inside Out & Book Again”, 成本都係詩, 你可以去望吓。

我都有買有借中文作文書我女睇, 不過我女試過投訴我借得太多。有些野放手, 個小朋友problem solving會好些。  其實女仔上到中學肯比個家長幫先算, 我女通常上綱找資料, 唔識都唔問我。
借乜書都好, 最重要小朋友喜歡睇。

我女中學都是有eng lit, 我無插過手，亦無預先小六時比佢看英詩

係有一年，我不記得中幾，佢叫我幫佢搵d英詩既書，佢在商務，三聯呢d搵不到

我記得佢中一的成績麻麻地，級中間位置，之後越讀越好，到後期選科，老師主動叫佢揀eng lit, 依家大一

佢同我講，叫我不好期望佢大一成績好好，因為佢要適應，即是好似中一甘，比d時間孩子自己長大，中一，二成績不太緊要，跌左可以起返身，比佢地獨立，真係到時佢要求你出手幫先幫

自己緊張小朋友中一成績，小六升中時，買一大叠書俾小朋友，作用不大，現放棄，佢反而會自己溫習，英國文學一般沙土比亞 可以 ，高中的佢，好似冇修文學，改修哲學，自己放手了

我中二睇呢本書，講作者一家由越南坐船到美國生活，如果可以，先畀女兒補充一下歷史知識再睇，會感受深刻好多。
