Some of my friends recommend "Steinbery" from Germany. Like most European pianos, Steinbery has a warmer, nicer tone than Yamaha. For around $40,xxx, I think it would be a better choice than the Japanese brand.
I also heard Petrof is not bad for $35,xxx.

In addition, I don't recommend renting a piano.
For renting a piano from TomLxx, you paid $240/month for a 10-15 years old Xinghai 星海. Plus you need to pay the round trip transportation $600. I don't think it is worthwhile.
There may be an additional choice of Korean piano. There is a brand called Ottostein which cost only 18,xxx. I don't know much of it but I've seen other BK parents have commends on it.
