Kumon Chinese

Is it good ? esp. for Int'l school kids.

My son is going to have Chinese lesson by private tutor once a week starting from P.1 (as he's going to Phoenix where they teach Chinese in Cantonese for P.1), but I'm afraid that's not enough practice for him to upkeep his Mandarin (he's having Mandarin lesson everyday now in his kindergarten). I'm thinking if Kumon can help him 'keep in touch' with Mandarin everyday and upkeep his Mandarin standard.

Know that there are quite many int'l school students learning Kumon Chinese, can any mommy share your experience & comment ?

Thanks,
Ruby

Re: Kumon Chinese

Kumon Chinese quality is much dependent on the teachers ancent.
My boy learns excellent Mandarin from his international school and he studies Kumon Chinese over 3 years.
But he thinks the Kumon teachers' pronunciation is full of Cantonese ancent.
Anyway, it is a good continous way to let my child to learn/read Chinese.

For my experience, Kumon Chinese
1. only the first one or two level is teaching about Mandarin 拼音
2. for higher level, no more Mandarin is using, unless the 朗讀 / 背詩
3. no matter which level, all teaching progress is using Cantonese, for the teachers are Cantonese

Re: Kumon Chinese

佢地冇默書ga,test只是test拼音,最級ge可能會test閱讀理解.
我個女只係讀到完全掌握到拼音就停了,覺得都夠了。
因為理解文章能力可從多看課外書著手。

Re: Kumon Chinese

Chanms,

O, I thought Kumon Chinese is for teaching Mandarin 'tim'. My purpose is to have my son practice Mandarin (listen to tape ? read by himself ?) everyday and learn pinyin. Do you mean that Kumon Mandarin can help enhance their Chinese reading ? But in Cantonese or Mandarin ? or it would depends on the teacher ? I'm quite confused.

Thank you in advance for offering your advice.

Re: Kumon Chinese

I am also interested in Kumon Chinese, can anybody recommend a good Kumon Chinese teacher (Shatin, Sheung Shui, Fanling or locations not too far away) for my son.  I believe that good teacher is the single most important element of any education.

Please advise.

Re: Kumon Chinese

Dear CherylMum & Ruby1219

I agree with alexlui that all learnings are much dependents on the teachers.

In my point of view:
1. Kumon really helps the children's Chinese, especially those are studying in int'l school. Becuase Kumon forces them to read/write Chinese every day.

2. As I know, Kumon provides CDs for every level. Since my son speaks accurate Mandarin, he seldom listens it, I won't buy it.

3. Yes, it is very boring to learn Kumon. My son studies all 3 subjects, Maths, English & Chinese.
The main idea is prastice, so no complicated or skill in analysis.

4. Ususally, every child should send around 15mins for each subject. And the amount of homework can be amended according to the parents' request.
e.g. my son studies 3 subjects, so I request the teacher reduce the assignment.

5. Kumon Chinese: the first 2 level help in Mandarin, and the upper level helps in reading/writing/grammer

Conclusion:
To choose various kinds of learning according to your child's need. My boy needs reading and writing skills (with assignment concept, most Int'l does not have assignment), so I force him to do Kumon.
Children never like to do exercise, as they don't like having rice. So, I insist him to do Kumon, even he rejected to do it. Methods: by gift, reducing the workload, telling him the concept/benefit.
But as a mum, we have to know which is benefital to them.
I tell him, if he really develop a reading habit, Kumon can be stopped.

For any Kumon details, you may phone 2789 8963 "He Wins Kumon" 曦榮公文.
It's a very well establish Kumon center with over 30 teachers. It is located at Mong Kok.
Free parent introduction course is held every month, you may join and know more!

Hope, it helps!

Re: Kumon Chinese

Hi ChanMS,

Thank you for your advice.

But in your earlier message, you have mentioned that the accents of the teachers are not right.
"But he thinks the Kumon teachers' pronunciation is full of Cantonese accent."

Are those teachers with Cantonese accents teaching in "He Wins Kumon" 曦榮公文?

Regards.

Re: Kumon Chinese

Language accent is much dependent on one's mother language.
My son is not quite sure.
He told me that they know Mandarin.
Because in "He Wins", there are many Chinese Kumon teachers, some of them are good.

Re: Kumon Chinese

hi all,

I agreed that "good teacher" is a very important factor. As I consider to send my daughter to Kumon to learn chinese, so I visited the center in Mei Foo three times to ask for the information. Unfortunately, I can't see they are good teachers. As if they don't have patient to give me information, I don't think that they will have patient to teach my kid. They treat me like a student.....it seem that I did something wrong for asking questions to them. I really don't like the feeling.....they are so rule....

Re: Kumon Chinese

"He Wins Kumon" 曦榮公文 is a very well-developed Kumon center, including all extra plan/programs to help children to promote.
The teachers are nice, and the headmaster is a wonderful lady who loves children very much.

Anyway, you may visit and take the free parent course first if you are interested.

Re: Kumon Chinese

Few years ago, my daughter is studying in "He Wins Kumon"(曦詠公文).  I agree that they are quite well-developed and a big centre.  The headmaster is quite professional.  She can present a very impressive parent talks.  It is in Mongkok (near Mongkok KCR station).

I'm now moving to Shatin (near Royal Ascot), my kids now studying there (a Kumon centre in Royal Ascot) for two months.  I don't know whether it is good or not.  Anyone has kids studying in Royal Ascot's Kumon centre can tell me this centre is good or not?

During the parent's talk, I don't like the headmaster's presentation.  It is very boring.  But I buy the Kumon's theory so I take the courses.

Re: Kumon Chinese

Dear CherylMum,

Yes, all repeating tasks are boring.
It depends what is benefitial to our children.

Private tutor is the best way if she/he provides a good teaching mechanism/materials.

Please refer to my reply on 1st Jun 2005 about Kumon Chinese.
