Like other parents have said, exposing your child to music, getting a good teacher coupling with regular and quality practice are the key to success. However, bear in mind that everyone is different and children develop differently.
In our case, we let our daughter listen to classical music in her early years. We have a piano at home and she would play randomly. She joined a music playgroup at 2 (kindermusik, but she kept running away). We took her to concerts (but she fell asleep most of the time). We wanted to take her to junior music course but there was always a long waiting list and so we waited till she was older to learn the piano directly. At 6 and a half, she started the piano with a private teacher, and at 10, the clarinet in school. She also joined the choir and band in school. She has done well in piano competitions and exams but I wouldn’t say she is musical nor does she have a passion for music. Music is just something to do. As parents, we only provide and hope that music will eventually become part of her life.
