IB take Maths studies

Math SL.

不過我的女兒係讀緊 Math Studies!因為她最怕就是數學,還有她只喜歡 Liberal Arts 及 Fine Arts.  現在她 Math Studies predicted score 應該有 6 或 7.

If the students want to do economics, quantitative finance, physics, statistics, actuarial etc at university, please say no to math studies. However, don't rule out math studies if the subjects they are interested in have nothing to do with math. I know students got admitted into Stanford/classics, HKU/medicine and Oxford/law with math studies.

But seems Canadian universities are tougher on Math Studies no matter what major you choose.

之前聽一個朋友講,為想攞高d的分,去揀Maths Studies,可能得不償失,因為真係淺,數底好係浪費光陰。但如果對數無興趣,讀上去亦一心讀純文科,亦吾需要勉強。

Many US universities would also not consider students that take Math Studies even for non science program.

Many? Name one single top US university that "would also not consider students that take Math Studies even for non science program". This is nonsense. For two years I interviewed students in HK on behalf of a member of Ivy League. And I know students who got into Princeton, Williams, Amherst, U of Washington and U Penn with math studies. Unlike UK universities, US universities do not consider some subjects "soft subjects". (For those subjects that are considered "soft" by UK universities, just check LSE website. LSE is very clear about what they want.)

Sorry to branch out, but we are seriously looking for good liberal arts school which you seem to be quite experienced .  Regarding the liberal arts, would you be able to send me some insights regarding the schools that you have experience with and your comments on them?

I think for US universities, they primarily look at GPA and test scores since that is how they are ranked by.  Then they will take a look at the rigor of your course load, so if you take good HL classes suitable for your intended major, then it should be fine.  My daughter is still revising her Math so that she can get a decent score in SAT or ACT.

Well. This discussion is getting no where (as usual).
First, my message was not for anyone but the person who first said that Math Studies is not what Canadian universities like. I only added that US universities also do not like MS.
I am only a parent. I do not know a lot of cases. But it is generally what most admission advisor would honestly tell students: there are lots of cases where students with English B or Math Studies do not get offers from "good" universities in the US, even with good overall grades.
How much help is it with US university by moving down from English A to English B or Math SL to MS is really hard to say.
Similar discussions have been created EK during the past 4 - 5  years regarding English B and MS.
Students can believe in what they want to believe.
If a student has already chosen to take English B or MS, I would definitely not reply to the discussion since that is really discouraging.
However, if a student is only asking for whether he should move from English A to English B, or Math SL to MS, I would definitely say "NO". Unless the student thinks he is going to fail.

Sorry. I cannot be like some other professional tutors/admission advisors that claims to have solid cases where students can get good offers with these subjects. Sorry for not being too encouraging.

Nintendo, I dont think I disagree with your view point.  It generally comes down to what are your target schools.  We are aiming for small liberal arts school so maybe they are more holistic in admissions approach.  Of course, if u have ability to handle Math SL, dont consider to drop to Math Studies just to boost up points.
For my daughter, she is a very lopsided abilities since primary but we try to maximize her HLs in English and History.

So, please dont take my comments seriously, it is just my personal opinion.

You did make the point here. I think the question for the host now is : math SL (poor grade) vs math studies (good grade), which one fares better. I think there is no way the host is confident the kid can get a decent grade in math SL.
