Are you talking about GCE A Level, and intending to apply to UK universities?  If so, would suggest to go for Economics but not Business Studies, as some UK universities view Business Studies as a "soft subject" which is less preferred when considering uni application.

Both subjects are not facilitating subjects (see below) according to the UK Russell Group of universities:

• Biology

• Chemistry

• English literature

• Geography

• History

• Physics

• Modern and classical languages

• Maths and further maths

兩科都不是必需的。Maths 同 Further Maths較重要。

If you don’t yet know what you’ll want to study atuniversity, there are some subjects which will keep your degree options openuntil you decide which course to take. Thesesubjects are commonly known as ‘facilitating subjects’ — they are the ones that open doors to more degrees andmore professions than others. It’s not about ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ subjects, but theright ones.

My son is also thinking taking these subjects for A Levels too, but hubby doesn't agree him taking history. Fingers crossed that he studies well for his GCSE first.

Why your husband not agree with him taking history? It is a very solid subject in UK! And the teachers there teach very well. My son was very turned off by his history teacher in HK, but then the teacher in UK magically ignited his passion in history!

Also, as parent I won't dictate his choice of subjects, but just giving advise and support

I think if you do well in History (in addition to other science or art subjects), you will have an edge when you apply for colleges.

Yes. That's what I was told by my son's teachers. He first picked double math, phy and chem, and naturally want to add econ as humanity subject like most other HK/Asian students do (his UK classmates said this is classic Asian choice 😂). But then his history teacher tried to convince him to take history instead of econ. So we asked his housemaster and other teachers for advice. Most of them said taking history on top of other science subjects would provide him a sharper edge.

His math teacher said taking double math would demonstrate your logic competence, while history would show high analytical and wiring skills. So they make a perfect though challenging set of subject selection for students to demonstrate their academic excellence.

Although it should be easier for my son to take econ as he has a good math foundation, he still wants to study history from his personal interest perspective, I just leave this decision to him.

Also his teachers said it's not mandatory to have GCE econ for applying econ for university. So he still has the chance to study econ in U if he wants to by the time.

No, he will take 5 subjects for lower six then probably drop to 4 for upper six. He will take math, further math, chemistry, physics and history. But chemistry it will be half (time) block and his teacher said double math = 1.5 subjects in terms of time.

Actually he took GCE Chinese already. That means he will have 5-6 GCE subjects achieved by then.
