Hi all,
As I had previously always wanted to send my baby girl to a LS until very recently, I am very unfamiliar with everything about IS and have just started to look into this option.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me on the approximate costs for this choice of education?
?Debenture/capital levy
? tuition fee
? meals/transports
? extra-curricular activities

I understand it varies a lot among schools but any input would help a lot as I need a realistic assessment of whether our family can comfortably afford this.

Thanks a lot!!

For ESF education

?Debenture/capital levy
$38000 pay once only at the start of year 1

? tuition fee
$10000> per month, still to be decided, will announce in March 2016

? meals/transports
I'm not sure about lunch. But as far as I know many children bring their own lunch, sandwich or food in warm flask.

Depending on where you live, but guess around 1200-2000$ per month

? extra-curricular activities
Within school hours and school teams should be free, unless you are joining ESF PROGRAMMES hosted by the ESF Centre that could cost $300-550 an hour.

For most of ESF costs you can refer to their websites. They are very self explanatory.

Hope this helps.

At the start, need to pay dentures or capital levy. Some schools require debentures which are refundable of a few hundred thousands when you leave, some you need to sell in open market. ESF is cheapest, only need to pay capital level of 30k to 40k which is depreciated over the years and non refundable.
For tuition, Reserve around $150k -200k (incl school fees, bus and lunch) more per year compared with local schools (eg private and DSS). Some schools' fees are lower like ESF, some higher like CIS or GSIS. They have annual trips every year (in Oct) starting secondary school, some are outside HK, additional 20k per trip. Some schools offer exchange programmes during summer or ski trips during Christmas  (optional), additional 30-40k per trip
At secondary, like year 9 up, might need to attend some tuition (normal), additional 10k a month
Some kids go abroad to boarding schools in year 9 and some in year 12, some stay until year 13 before they enter uni
Uni application starts in year 12
Proportion of kids staying in HK for tertiary education is low
So you also need to estimate the cost of going abroad for uni, cost including living would be around $500k a year
If you add up from year one up till year 13, the cost would be around 2.6m to 3m (if you include debentures) subject to fees adjustment. But school fees would increase every year.
Then you add cost of tertiary education
The main difference between IS and LS is the debenture, monthly tuition and cost of studying abroad for tertiary education

IS compares with LS with inflation adjusted
Economic: 4 mio per head
Expensive: 6 mio per head
( from kindergarten to high school)

That's why most people won't choose IS.
Gold luck

Hi all,

ESF is the most affordable International Schools in HK. You could find the details from her website:

Primary schools (Years 1 to 6)         - HK$ 78,700   paid over 10 months
Secondary schools (Years 7 to 11)      - HK$ 110,600 paid over 10 months
Secondary schools (Years 12 to 13)    - HK$ 116,200 paid over 10 months
The cost of the NCL will be HK$38,000 for students entering Year 1 and will be reduced, on a sliding scale.

Besides, home lunch and public transport would save a lot. (We did move close to school and prepare lunch for my boy.)

Year Camp from Year 4 and it costs $3-4000

Actually is more than 10k.

Starting from August 2016, the Hong Kong SAR Government will be phasing out the recurrent subvention to ESF year by year over a period of 13 years. In addition to inflation adjustment, tuition fees for students entering year 1 in 2016-17 could rise by approximately HK$17,000 to fully cover the reduction in the subvention.   In 2016-17, all other year groups (except Year 1) will continue to enjoy the subvention from the government, including new students joining Years 2 to 13 in the year.

主要係計學費和可能出國讀書的費用,體藝補習遊學的支出,其實本地學校都要。

Actually Moonlight's statement is correct,
$78700 + $17000 = $95700
It is nearly $10000 per month

Yes, tuition is common for all kids in HK.  However, it is more likely that those tuition centres catering for IS students charge much higher.  It is also expensive to hire French or German tutors.

My kid had learnt a third language for 4 years and didn't have tutor until the very last minute before her public exam.  To be honest she would not have got an A* without those tutorials.  Since then she got another A Math tutor and she's so glad that she could finally catch up with her class.  Well, it's her choice.  As long as she's happy, I don't mind.

for primary i would say around 15k for a decent IS (not CIS, HKIS, Harrow etc) and for high school you should expect 15l-20k and you should expect a single digit % increase every year..
