Re: 請問會揀中西區那間女子中學?
I am new to this forcum. I was also asked similar questions by some other parents in the primary section of this forum. A lot of parents in central and western district have been intrigued by this question and there have been even more misconceptions around it.
I am not prepared to say which school is better as I think the answer should be different for different students and parents.
However, I am quite happy to share some of my observations here with other interested parents. I live in mid-levels and I know some students from both schools.
Ying Wah tends to be the first choice among the parents IN THIS DISTRICT. But if you ask a parent outside the district, they tend to rate St Stephen Girls(SSGC) higher. Are the parents in this district wiser? Although I, as someone living in this area, would sometimes naively believe so, this should not be reason. Then What is the reason behind this interesting phenonmenon?
Ying Wah reported is one of the schools with its F1 intakes 100% being Band 1 students and it is probably the only such school in the school net. There are 3 other girls' schools in this area: SGCC, St Clare's and Sacred Heart(I include this school because practically most of its students come from its feeder school at Caine Road). I summarise in the following all 4 schools' place allocation for 2005/2006:
From feeder/ Open to central & west/open to southern
SSGS / 94 / 48 / 2
SCGC / 102 /10 / 8
SHCC / 153 / 5/ 22
YWGS/ 0/128/ 6
As such, I suspect the reason why parents in this area rate YWGS first probably because they believe this will increase the chance of their daughters gaining an English seat in F1.
I am not saying YWGS is not as good as SSGC. I am only trying to explore why somehow Ying Wah is a more popular choice among the P6 parents in this district.
I believe the academic performance of both schools is comparable. I happened to click into SSGC website several months ago and the school published very detailed public exam results of their students there and I compared them with published data of YWGS. I did not form the impression the latter is better acaemically. My advice to the parents is that should try to understand the two schools more and decide on the school which suits more their daughter. You can even go to any restaurant on Bonham Road around lunch time and observe the students from these two schools and see which style you like more.
One point worth mentioning is YWGS adopts the traditional 'elite' class system while SSGC has a more interesting system to handle the problem of teaching students of different capabilities. They divide the students into 3 levels for the three major subjects individually. Besides a student's home class, they will go to different classes for their Chinese, English and Mathematics studies. So there are 5 home classes for F1 but 7 smaller classes for 3 different levels for each major subjects. You can't help admiring the resources such schools command.
For those who are interested in knowing more about the place allocation mechanism in this district for girls, they can refer to my posts in the primary section of this forum. |
