Dear all,

Thanks! looking  forward to all your sharings

Depends on students and families individually.  Some can't read properly, some write beautifully.  In general ESF Hong Kong can read newspaper, and write a simple correspondent letter with no problem if parents support and encourage their learning at home persistently.

So many people ask about the chinese level of different international schools.
It is hard to answer generally.
First, I think everyone has his own expectation when it comes to "being able to read chinese newspaper" and "being able to write chinese letters".
Second, there are students with very wide range of abilities. Even if we are only considering home grown ESF students (i.e. those that got into ESF since Year 1).
Even in local schools, there are students that get 5** in Chinese and there are students that get 2 or 1 in Chinese.
I would say, (1) student effort and (2) family support are extremely important

ESF would give Chinese homework and reading materials that suit your daughter.  You have a good start, and I would recommend you to think of 'BIG' to support your girl to achieve Chinese level as good as local school students, or even better.  Good luck!

ESF/QBS allows students to use Mandarin as a language among students?  What is the E in ESF?

When we say foreigners we don't mean passports, we mean ethnicity.

Yes, in fact it's encouraged. As all kids at school are learning PTH at their own pace in different pathways. It is a common language in a way.

E means English. Their teaching medium is English in all subjects except Chinese. All teachers, except in Chinese and other foreign languages in secondary, are native English speakers. Most of them are from the UK.

As IS in HK, ESF has to have a majority of foreigners as students (by passport, NOT ethnic group), as required by the Education Department. Although many foreign passport holders are of Chinese origin (including mixed Chinese).

Most people know these facts. Does the school have a target ideal mixture of playground language?  How do they Maintain that ideal mixture?  What if the playground has 80% PTH?  How do they know the best mixture?
