If the child has an aust passport, then he's not exactly just a "hk boy" :) Of course, i always believe appearance do make a difference when it comes to interview (as in those blond hair kids have an advantage over my kid), but yes, the child's own ability play an important part in most IS interviews.
For language acquisition it is best for each parent/ caretaker to use one language each only, especially for babies. It does them no good to switch around or mix languages. For my family, starting when my son was 10 months old (when i found out about this point) i used English and my husband used Chinese, since he spend much less time with our boy, although my husband's English is better then mine.
TT is as good as any, with the benefit of mandarin. If your child is already there, stick with TT. It's best not to move the child around too much. A consistent environment (and schedule) is very beneficial for a young child.
