IGCSE vs IB

今年要替小兒入紙申請國際學校。想請教各位媽咪：有幾間IS係先考IGCSE然後最尾兩年IB的 （eg ESF/ SIS), 呢D學校同全IB的學校 (eg VSA/ CDNIS/ CIS)在課程和學習模式上應怎樣比較呢?謝謝各位！

如果最終都是考IBDP的話，那麼分別不會很大。若然不肯定孩子的能力及強弱項，就要留意以下幾點:
-IBMYP對預備IBDP較好
-IGCSE是公開試而IBMYP則不是
-如轉A-level或Foundation則配搭IGCSE較好

I am guessing you are applying from the secondary level? CIS uses MYP & IBDP but not PYP, where as many (most) ESF primary now uses PYP whereas many of their secondary only use IBDP (but the ESF PIC like RC & DC uses the full PYP/MYP/IBDP program), so your info is correct if you are talking about the secondary level, but incorrect if you are referring to the full program each school provides. I just want to clarify in case other parents reading this also become confused. Also, in regards to "IGCSE是公開試而IBMYP則不是", slamai please note that the IB is introducing a new MYP assessment model in 2016 that includes mandatory moderation of the personal project and optional external assessment (eAssessment). http://www.ibo.org/myp/assessment/

There are those who find IBMYP not solid enough due to the lack of external assessments, so i suppose the IB board noticed the flaw and are actively rectifying it. From what i heard IGCSE should be more academically solid in the traditional sense but like siamai said, IBMYP may lead to IBDP smoother. Other parents with kids in MYP/IGCSE please do tell us of your experiences (as my boy is still very young so everything i've got is just 3rd hand information).

My kids are a lot older than yours.  My experience is that the school your kid goes to probably matters more than whether the school is doing IGCSE or MYP (assuming that's your only concern).  In other words, if all else being equal, the standard of teaching of individual school is probably more important than the curriculum itself.

By the way, there is one further point that you might like to consider.  We all know there is no problem for IGCSE students to pick either IB or A Levels. Some people also say there wouldn't be any problem for MYP students switching to A Levels. I don't know anybody who actually did this. It would be nice if someone could share their actual experience on this point and the pluses and minuses they encountered.

其實ESF的中學課程中已滲入一定的MYP學習，另兼顧IGCSE考試課程。

I don't know MYP students but PYP graduates going to IGCSE secondary school seem fine, according to some parents & teachers with PYP kids (all expats).

ESF students take IGCSE. The content of IGCSE is easy and the exams are not hard. Thus there is a huge gap between IGCSE and IBDP. Parents should be informed. No need to hide this fact. Having said that, ESF schools (at least my kids school) would help students out with this gap. So most students do not have huge problems with moving from IGCSE towards IBDP. Yes, there are still a lot that complain that they have problems with IBDP. However, these students are mostly those that do not do well at school anyway.
