I have read through the ibo website, but am still confused about the requirements for obtaining a IB Diploma.  Anyone with experiences please help with the below questions:
1) Of the 6 subjects, 3 of them must be in Higher Level?

2) If a student takes 2 Language A subjects (Group 1), does he/she still have to take a Language B subject (Group 2).  In other words, doing 3 languages?

3) What is the requirement from getting a "billingual" diploma?

Thank you for your help.

1. Yes
2. Not sure, may be the school will not allow 2 subjects from the same group.
3. 2 language A subjects gives you a bilingual diploma.

Thanks, Rowena,

But according to your answer to (3), it seems to contradiction to your answer to (2).   Can you help me to understand more?  Thanks again.

Group 2 doesn't mean Language B subjects. It only means a second language. In other words, it can be in the level of ab initio, B or A. And with two Languages A, students don't need to take a 3rd language.

回覆:IB Diploma Requirements - Help!

Group 1 ----- has to be Language A
Group 2 ----- can be Language A, Language B or Language ab initio

So total 2 language classes.

You are absolutely correct, what i said was contradictory.
Let me start again: a bilingual diploma is awarded to those who complete 2 group 1 courses. Even though ibo.org states that a student must choose at least one subject from group 2, this requirement serves to ensure everyone studies 2 languages, one at Lang A, and the other at Lang B or Ab Initio.
Practically, those students who are able to study 2 group 1 courses, ie bilingual diploma, need not choose another group 2 subject. Thus, there should not many studying 3 languages (i am sure this is possible for gifted linguists).

回覆 Rowena 的帖子

In Group 6 subject, a student can choose an art subject, 2nd science subject, 2nd humanities subject, or 3rd language subject.  For example, it is possible for a student to choose Eng A, Chinese A, and French B.

(1) Yes, a minimum of 3 HLs.

(2) It is possible to take 3 language subjects.  The ISF student who went to Princeton last year took English, Chinese and French. There are a few who do English, Chinese and Latin this year.

(3) See the IBO's website for bilingual diploma: https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/xwi ... oma%3A+2013+onwards

Any specific reasons why students took 3 language subjects. Seems less common in other schools

Hi Poonseelai, the Princeton goer is now studying Classical Studies.  I guess she is a lover of classical literature and philosophy. (There is a typo in my earlier post. She took English, Chinese and French, not Latin.  I have corrected it)  ISF has Latin and Classic Studies (both Western and Chinese) for the upper grade students. Some students love them.

Hi tingtingting, Did the Princeton student from ISF self studied French? And are Latin and classical studies taught at regular lessons at school or "extra" courses? From ISF's IB program booklet on its website, seems only English and Chinese are offered as languages.
