Seeking for advise - 升中準備

Hi mothers,

My son is a P3 student at a private local school.  I would like to seek for your advise to prepare his "assets" for acquire a seat in a Band 1 secondary.
He has very good academic results at school, apart from this he got some medals in 4 x 100 relay at inter-school swimming gala, he is also a member of his school swimming team.  Is that enough?  What else does he need?  Actually I don't much about 升中機制, is it all depends on academic result or it still a hit-and-miss?

Can some 過來人 give me some advice?

係咁樣，首先，一至三年班成績再標青都好，中學是不會計的。第二，如果要計游泳成績，一般是計你游出之時間，一至三年班拿多少牌也好，到報考中學時，己成過去式，我想也無用。有一學界比賽得獎之孩子，50米，33-34秒(我可能記錯)，報中學時，發現報中學游水成績那張Form，他填不下，要填在 “其他”一欄。

但你也不用太担心，你的孩子就讀私校，你看看他的師兄的派位，這是最好之指標。如果師兄派位好的，你放心可也。幾家頂級中學，中一合計有位1000，而在各項大賽拿冠亚軍的，不到100人，且這些人中有的玩得太投入，而廢了學業。頂級中學最喜歡的學生，是成績好，其他也有出色的表現，像令郎一樣，成績好，游水見得吓人，就是了。

用平常心讀書吧，我們追求名校，名校也追求好學生。有頂級名校未出入學信，但早一星期有的家長己收到此校電話，點解？頂級名校想和其他名校爭學生也。

最後一句，如果令郎學校派位好的話，又如果令郎保持這樣之趋勢，咁你定過抬油都得。

很多謝你的回應, 我兒的學校一向派位都不錯, 有 over 60% 派往 Band 1中學, 但每年報紙也有報導有些學生雖然有好成績但也考不到心儀的中學所以有點擔心, 究竟這次派位是靠實力還是仍須靠點運氣?  如在自行收生時去 interview 手上除了標青的學業成績外表, 再沒有其他甚麼獎狀, 証書是否會輸蝕呢?

現在有33% band1學生，但只有25% 英中，有些學生雖然有好成績但也考不到心儀的中學是正常的。將来呢，聽說Band1學生將提高至40%，而只要85%收生合格(我估band1)加上教師合格就能成為英中，所以我估將来之英中數目要比現在多。所以，如果你以英中為目標，前景不錯。

自行收生階段，要看你選甚麽學校，將来有两個選擇，比現在理想。總之，成績好，又參與其他活動，無往而不利的。

Yet, most famous band 1 schools accept majority of F.1 students from their own primary schools, each school release only 15-20% seats for other students.  So the competition to top schools is really very keen.  As I heard, only about top 10% of all students have the bargaining power to compete into those top secondary schools.  Other band 1 students will likely go into their direct secondary schools.
