With international schools, it is best to start from kindergarten and follow through all the way. If the child is first exposed to local style structured learning and gotten used to it, then what you described above could happen when he/she switches to inquiry based learning at international schools.

Well I guess you are right... St Catherine although carries that "international" school name, I guess it's quite "local" or more of a bilingual school with relatively local approach...( just my perception)
Or he is in the wrong place right from start.

We are upper middle class. 11 years ago when we decided to put our son into international school, we were not very well off, only 30% of the income level we have now. But since we really prefer the IS education approach and we expect our salaries will rise healthily every year (we were in the workforce for 5-6 years at that time), we did not think too much and enrolled him into international kindergarten. We were being criticized by families and friends for giving up free education and go for such expensive choice. People think we are "on gui"! And, on top on school fee, we spent most of our expenses in our son's ECA, overseas football camps, summer camps, school trips, vacation trips etc. While, our living style is pretty local and humble, especially my husband's. Lucky that we have the consensus that education and exposure for our son is the most worthwhile expense for our family. We plan to send him abroad for university too, although it is quite a burden. But we think the exposure and experience would be precious!

Yes I share your view as well... If you believe that the kind of exposure at IS is worthwhile of the cost, you make the choice and sacrifice something else. (Of course there's a bottom line, 30% of total income for education seems acceptable)
Many spend bucks for the H bags or other extravagance stuff to satisfy their little vanity but not willing to spend on the kid's education or more meaningful exposure (not another shopping trip to Thailand, Japan or Korea...)
We come across many very down to earth parents dress modestly without branded handbags at IS.
My family, we believe in decent neighborhood to live and good school for our kids to be the toppest of the priority, so we spend most of our money on these.

I agree with you. I supposed we are like what you were 11 years ago,not extremely well off but have healthy income and we can afford the school fee of sending our daughter to an international school.

I always tell people, if we did not use the money to spend on her school fee, we would probably spend it on something else (short term luxury) such as expensive dinners, luxury holidays, bigger house, better car .... , but we think a better education is actually more satisfactory and worth much more then all of the above. And we are all very happy now even without the above mentioned luxury.

Luckily, all our friends and relatives are very supportive of our decision, they all say they can see my daughter is much more happier than when she was in a local kindy last year.

yes, similar experience : few years ago, we sent our son to CTY summer camp for the first time, which costed us 2xk for a 3 weeks course. my friends and sisters all said it's way too expensive. But I explained that actually if not sending him to this summer course, we might use the 2xk for a 4-5days short trip to Thailand or Taiwan, in which not much additional experience we will gain.

Turned out, my son enjoyed and learned a lot after the 3 weeks and we are enrolling him into this summer camp for the fourth year (different courses every year) despite its increased fee.

Hi, my friend from USA also recommends this class. What grade is your son? Did you also spend 3 weeks there? Cos my daughter wishes to go and I am wondering if I need to bring her there, stay for 3 weeks and come back with her to HK?

I want to agree with you but I can't make myself to. While study camps are good for academic or learning to be independent. Family holidays are good too for bonding, sharing precious moments with the family and other reasons. It does not mean we only need study camps but not family holidays.

The more bizzare a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be.

Why not send him to the one at Johns Hopkins campus?  Its campus is okay but the exposure to US culture would be much greater.
