Your son's application is not the same as my son, as he attended EPGY Summer Institute only. I can share some experience which may be useful for your case.

1. For EPGY, you can inform them your son's flight schedule and request them for airport pickup. They will arrange helper(s) to pick him up and drive him to the campus for registration. Of course, the service only provide a couple of days before the program start and free of charge.

2. It's not uncommon to submit course works for application, it's a good training for coming university application. Even for EPGY, the applicants also need to write something about a few open end questions for the application.

Does the Summer Institute provide airport transportation to and from Stanford?
The Summer Institutes provides transportation from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Students who are admitted to the program will be given detailed information regarding the procedure for airport transportation. Students using the airport shuttle service will provide their flight information to the Summer Institutes, and Summer Institutes staff members will receive students at the airport and accompany them back to Stanford University. A contact number will be provided for notifying Summer Institutes staff of late arrivals, and for students who need assistance locating the Summer Institutes staff at the airport. The Summer Institutes also provides transportation to take students to the San Francisco airport on the day of departure. The cost of airport shuttle service on Arrival and Departure days is included in Summer Institutes tuition. Students flying into San Francisco who are taking advantage of transportation provided by Summer Institutes must arrive and depart on the designated days for the session they are attending. The Summer Institutes is not able to provide transportation for students if they arrive on other days.

My kids have never attended this program. I found this paragraph in the program's website and I thought you might find it helpful.  But I could share with you what I did with the few programs that my kids attended in the past.  Firstly， you need to write to the school and ask for the details eg when and whereabout in the airport their staff will meet your kid.  Next, you need to find out which airline or airlines flying from HK that will have flights that will arrive there closest to the designated time (having taken into consideration the time it will take to clear the immigration and customs etc). You may not want the kid to arrive too early (as he may need to wait too long there by himself) or too late (as there might be late arrival of the flight).  If you kid is too young, you may want him to fly UM.  Make the same planning with the return trip.  Finally, planning is planning. Something unexpected might happen.  You must give your kid a phone so that he could call you anytime.

Anyone have experience with the program?  What is the admission acceptance rate?  They sound like very competitive.

It is quite expensive.  If you had experience, what do you think of it?  Is it good?

CX is fine with me.  The one thing you need to pay particular attention to is the time of arrival and departure.  My kid once missed her flight completely and she had to stay one extra night.  The school took her to the airport too late for the flight and she couldn't go back to the school because everybody had left.  Luckily we found someone to look after her.  That's why I said you must give your kid a mobile phone so that he could contact you anytime in case of trouble.
