Good question. Sometimes I wonder why most HK students nowadays have more resources but seems to achieve less. Take English as an example. I still recall chapter 1 of my primary 1 Eng book had only 6 words: a man, a pen, a cup, a plate, a tram, a train. In secondary we read simplied versions of Tow Sawyer, Treasure Island, Wuthering Height, A Tale of Two Cities and Animal Farm.
Toddlers nowadays learn "words" in play groups, parents using flash cards, kids and students going to tuitorial centres all the way through primary to secondary. Yet, so many people complaining HK's level of English is declining. Why?
Looking back, I would say the local system in the old days was more like that of an international school in terms of work load and time for children to "hea" and have fun. Most parents at that time did not have time and probably the knowledge to help the children who no doubt would need to find ways to survive. Perhaps less is more!
