5. 考到一間唔係自己First and second choice的學校, 所以咁遲都未決定走唔走, Ashford school or Cheltenham College 好D呢?
6. 其實大家點解比仔女去英國留學? 為前途? 教育制度? 外國一定好過係香港讀?

Pls give me some advices

(1)  Year 10 is a nearly GCSE year. It is most likely your son will need half a year to catch up the pace of foreign school life and might have difficulty in GCSE foreign language subject like French etc.

If the school does not have many Chinese and has many compulsory after-school activities, it is worthwhile to send the kid abroad.

(2)  The rule of game for DSE is different from GCE. DSE places heavy emphasis in core subjects like Chinese, English and Liberal Studies. If your son gets 5** in these subjects, your son may get offers from local university. However, most top notch UK universities would not count these three subjects but for other elective subjects like Physics etc.  Most top notch UK universities require a min of 2A*1A in GCE.

(3)  I think it is quite easy for average students to get 7 or 8 As in GCSE even for some hea hea students. The marking scheme for GCSE A* is top 90%; A top 80%, B top 70%, C top 60% marks etc. If you want your son to obtain a 7 or 8As GCSE certificate, it is not difficult at all.

For a good DSE result, your son must achieve high marks in 4 core subjects: Chinese, English, Maths and Liberal Studies. If your son cannot excel in these subjects, I think going abroad is not a bad choice.

(4)  You may also count in the opinion from school teachers.

(5)  I think it is quite late for application to other top ranking schools for Year 10 this year.  I am willing to pay for independent schools with ranking under 110 and state schools with ranking under 600.

One of my friends let her kid to repeat Grade 9 in UK in order to enter into a top ranking school and just know that her kid just got 5A*1A in 6 different GCSE subjects in Grade 10 yesterday. Just wonder whether she will get another A* for resit in the coming June and another 6A* in another 6 subjects next year.

(6)  My decision to send my son abroad is let him have GREATER EXPOSURE, fluent English, an easier higher grade GCE cert, healthier school life and independent character.

It is totally up to your son' decision. Does he has international horizon ? Is he determined to excel in different culture ?Which university does he want to enter ?
Mother 's planning is not always correct.

I'm not familar with the British system.  Does it mean that a student can sit for a few GCSE subjects in UK in one year and some other subjects in another year(s) ?

As far as I know, there are two GCSE exam sessions normally held in Jan and May each year.

Each subject may be comprised of several modules and a student can take some modules of the subject (say 30% of the subject) in Jan exam and the remaining modules (say 70%of the subject) in May exam. Or else the student can sit for all modules of the subject at one time.  If the student does not satisfy with the exam result for Jan exam, he can re-sit the exam in the next exam session even though he obtains A grade in the previous sitting.

Some UK schools may allow top set students to sit for a few subjects in Year 10 and the remaining subjects in Year 11.  Some schools may only allow students to sit for the subject at one time while some schools may allow students to sit for several modules of the subject at one time and the remaining modules in another sitting.

However, some top notch UK schools do not allow students to take partial modules for the exam and only allow one sitting at the end of Year 11.  You may check with the schools concerned on their exam policy.

Sorry that I might have out-dated information on the structure of GCSE.  Would you elaborate more on the current system?

My son currently taking AS exam seems to allow taking partial exam for the subject and re-sit  for the same subject.

However, my friend currently studying in King's Canterbury said that there was no separate sitting for GCSE in King's and the GCSE took place at the end of Year 11.

Please see:  http://web.aqa.org.uk/support/changes-to-GCSEs/

From my agent: "Now each subject is taught as a whole entity.  Consequently pupils will sit all the examinations for each subject in the summer of Form Five. (Mathematics & English, however, can still be sat in the winter.)  This means that student can't  now resit individual modules, although they still can resit the whole GCSE."

點評

I think the bright student can still sit for GCSE in year 10 or even in Year 9, not necessarily in the summer of year 11.

Thx for yr information.

If you graduate in UK, you can only be chosen by UK company. Then it is better to go to mainland China to study, you would be chosen by Chinese company ! How ridiculous logic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
