Can understand! As parents, even though my son came from band 1 english school in HK, I will worry if he can completely understand the teacher's lecture and instructions, if he can work along with the peers, if he will be bullied, if he is happy.
May be we are staying in a small town? may be my son is the only Chinese? may be this school is particularly welcome Chinese? we don't know.....the year 8 classmates came to shake hands with my son and introduce themselves at the main dining hall during lunch time on the first school day. There are five Year 8 class in my son's school. Since everyone has different time table, they will know each other within one week.
Regarding academic side, the school is doing small classes, for english, math, phy, chem, bio, they will categorize the kids with their levels. There is TOP SET classes.
No matter any subjects, there will be learning support, e.g. if you can't do well on particular homework, the teacher will notify the learning support teacher, the teacher will find you and take you to support. You can't escape! For languages, in-house learning support teachers can't handle, you willl be charged for extra lessons. Homework group after school is available too.
My son, as "english as second language" student, he needs to sit in IELT exam, therefore, he will not have French lesson, the time will be swifted to ESL.
Hope the above info can release your worry a little bit!
