Switch to International School

Hi!

My daughter is studying in primary one of a subsidised local school and she is quite enjoying. However, the english standard is only so-so. Therefore, I am considering to transfer her to an international school in which english and mandarin will be taught.

I like to get some more information about Victoria International School (IB standard) and Think International School which is a new school.

My concern is. If my child studies in these International Schools, can she switch back to local english secondary school which is under the Secondary School Places Allocation (SSPA) System from the Government.

Hi,

My opinion is - once you change your child to int. school, I doubt you'll swap it to local secondary school as they will enjoy the school life very much.

You may try to explore the Int' class from Tsung Tsin primary; they cover the local curriculum plus the syllabus from the Int's stream. Medium of instruction is in Eng & Mandarin and their class teacher is the native English teacher.

I have already considered Tsung Tsin Primary (International Class), in fact, there are two concerns, the school bus will pick up children before 7am since the school hour will start at 7:30am, besides there are few lessons of religious study per week.  If you are Christian, then you may find it worthwhile.

Think International Primary is very new, it adopts Canadian system and located at Kowloon Tong.  As it only starts for 1 to 2 years, it is difficult to know whether it is good or not.

Victoria has been established for long time, using IB, so seems to be more reliable.  Location on HK side.  Heard that it is quite easy-going in primary.

I think it is not easy for the kids to switch back to local schools afterwards as the way of teaching is very different.  If switch to some DSS may be easier.

Do you have additional information on Think International primary? How much is the school fee? And class size?

I don't know much about Think Primary.  As I know, the school fee is $5900 per month, class size is not large, not sure how many.  Maybe you can check with the school directly.

Hi ALAL,

There are 2 combined classes in Think International School(primary section), that is, P1 and P2 form one class and P3 and P4 form another.  However, they will attend chinese and english lessons seperately.

The size of each combined class should be less than 20.

Seems that you have got some info.  Have you applied for any international school yet?

Are you choosing international school with both Chinese and English studies?  Will you consider DSS like PLK CKY or TSL, Logos or GT as well?

I will not consider Logos or GT because I prefer the teaching languages are english and putonghua only.

I don't konw much about PLK CKY and TSL.

The combined class, such as P1 and P2 in Think, as there are not too many students in each class, so P1 and P2 will join together in some subjects but P1 will have its own english and chinese lessons, and so are the other classes.

I heard that PLK CKY and TSL are also teaching in English and Putonghua only.

These 2 schools are quite famous now and they have thousands of applications each year.  CKY's fee is higher, around $4K per month, while TSL is only $1K+ per month.  CKY will have its secondary school a few years down the road, not sure about TSL (no secondary now).  

For ISF Academy, I have read from their website, it is very new, just set up in 2003, and has P.1 to 5 only currently.  They don't have a permanent school site yet, they use IB as well.  Fee is very high, $9,500 a month.

So which school you are considering?

I fact I also considering ISF and some other international schools. While I look for international schools, there is a dilemma with the offset of Chinese Language. I note that there are some discussion in BK previously. You may read them at "http://www.baby-kingdom.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=190491&forum=7#2885739". It appears that ISF is a reasonable compromise.

I understand that a new campus should be ready in Cyberport next year
